Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models surpassed the skills of humans in the 1960’s in the same way that IBM’s Deep Blue beat the world’s chess champion (Garry Kasparov) in 1997. NWP is a great tool in a forecaster’s tool box. This “chat” from NWS Birmingham shows why uncertainties still exist:

I go “hm maybe I don’t need to be applying to THIS many REUs, especially since some are not really my area of interest” (original list had 9 I think) and then I go on reddit and everyone’s like “I’m applying for 15 different REUs, is that enough?” and everyone’s saying no

This World AIDS Day, we remember the hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers lost to HIV and AIDS, and those living with HIV today. We must remind ourselves and each other that the fight isn’t over until the epidemic is over for everyone.

From a crewmember on yesterday's Teal 74 mission into now-Category 5 Hurricane #Melissa. As clear of an eye as you will see in the Atlantic basin.

In the last 30-40 minutes or so, we’ve seen a tremendous increase in lightning within the eyewall of #Melissa. This is one of the major harbingers for continued intensification of the storm, and its intensity could be significantly stronger by the time the sun rises once again in a few hours…

Hurricane Melissa has rapidly intensified into a major, Category 3 storm.

Strengthening is expected to continue overnight.

As #Melissa crawls toward #Jamaica, the storm will appear on their radar. If you want to reduce the demand on the Meteorological Service of Jamaica's web server and make it more responsive for everyone, you can find a long updating radar loop at bmcnoldy.earth.miami.edu/tropics/radar/.

If @ametsoc.org or @nwas.org ever gave out a "Graphic of the Year" award, it should go to Jay Cordeira, displaying the synoptics behind the Predecessor Rainfall Event before #Helene

It's an amazing graphic and displays our double whammy of 'rain and then more rain.'

This was a particularly fascinating photo of the Dickens tornado. The bottom 1/3 of the condensed tornado appeared to 'hollow out' leaving just the shell of the circulation condensed, surrounded by dust. If you look closely the residual condensation takes on a 'braided' look similar to vinyl tubing.

look @ this workhorse of a filter we got for my turtle’s tank (fluval FX4, rated for 250 gallons, 700 gal/hr) (he is in a 75 gal tank that isn’t filled all the way) (this is not really overkill)

last night my friend and I had a moment of “ok this storm is not even severe warned but I have a feeling about it, I’m turning around” and then pulled over and got these pictures
June 7, 2025 at 9:20 PM
as someone from the huntsville AL area i can’t stop thinking about that cell a couple weeks ago. imo, the tornado it put down near gurley was the tornado that storm was trying to produce its entire lifetime. i genuinely believe if it hadn’t hit the lookout mountain plateau it would’ve been historic
