You’d have to massage the dialogue and cut some bits, and you’d need WAY more naturalistic performances, but honestly I think this would work really well as a stage play
My two star review for Captives: I really wanted to like this, and there's the bones of a really good "you can't just run away from your sins" type of story here. Unfortunately director Gary Cohen cannot build tension to save his life. Part of it is the too-heightened performances, part of it is the goofy, plonky synth soundtrack. You have to be building that tension through the first and second acts so that when things spin out of control in the third it's a sort of release. Here, it's just flat, and the violence feels more like an inevitability than anything. There's an inherent grimy reality to video that the best SOV filmmakers lean into. Cohen almost seems like he's trying to counteract it and the move is worse for it.

My three star, hearted review of Lucky Stiff: Phenomenal whenever Joe Alaskey is on screen. I have a weakness for fat guy stand-up, so I was always going to be in his corner, but he has such tremendous physical charisma. Kind of ironic for a guy who's most well known as a voice actor. The screenplay isn't great on its own, but the jokes that do land are pretty good. Perkins is shockingly competent at directing for someone who came to it so late in life and did so little of it. He's a bit workmanlike here but there's also some inspired shots (the transition on the shutting door in the first scene in the honeymoon suite! fun!). It's a shame he didn't get the chance to direct more.

1001 albums with ana #58: it's cool seeing an album that i think unequivocally without reservation is worth inclusion on a list of albums to listen to before you die. that brings the total to.... well still under 5 but it's a tough list to make i guess
album art for marvin gaye - let's get it on when i first was pulling this up it didn't immediately click in my brain as The Sex Album until i heard the opening notes. the most immediate "oh yup, easy five" in ages. it's basically a meme at this point just how sexual this album is, but it's pretty much perfect. incredible talent by marvin gaye to execute so precisely on the vision of this album in such a timeless way. even beyond the title track which i was already well acquainted with, every track on here is a standout track on its own. simply an all-timer, no notes. 5

I think it makes sense that Barry Lyndon and Eyes Wide Shut are the Kubrick films to see the biggest boosts this decade considering they are his films dealing most directly with class and the futility of trying to break into the elite
