In June 2018, based on my book "Transatlantic Traumas," I warned of the dangers we see full-blown today.

I am a big fan of Heather Cox Richardson every day, but today's column does a particularly good, and chilling, job of documenting how the Trump administration is trying to destroy our government and replace it with some form of fascist oligarchy.

In my 2018 "Transatlantic Traumas: Has illiberalism brought the West to the brink of collapse?" I concluded the radical right threat should be met with more than usual politics. I recommended what I called "radical centrist populism." Now updated: stanleysloan.substack.com/p/stanley-r-...

FYI: Information is "classified" once the process to declare it as such has been performed. SecDef Hegseth, who can declare information "classified," did not do so and released information that by all standards was very sensitive and should have been classified, probably at a relatively high level.

Stock market investors who voted for Trump: Is it clear yet that the guy with six bankruptcies, operates on grievance and whim, pursues foolish economic ideas like tariffs and relishes trade wars should not be directing the American economy?

USA DISTRESS CALL we are in a constitutional crisis, and nearing an existential one as the Trump/Musk presidency, cooperating with the Putin autocracy, are trying to ride rough shod over the rule of law.

BREAKING: Trump is losing support: Less than one month into the chaotic return of Trump, and these Trump-voting farmers have already had enough. If the election were held today, they would not vote for him.

Make sure everyone sees this!

The battle of our day is no longer about Democrats versus Republicans or left versus right.

The choice right now is democracy or dictatorship. And we're sliding faster than I ever thought possible into the latter.

Everyone must choose which side they’re on. Now.

“Delete” the CFPB & IRS. Abolish bank regulators. Gut Social Security and Medicare.

The Musk-Trump administration’s plots all boil down to the same thing: swindle working people, funnel money to the ultra-rich.

Tesla earned $2.3 billion in the United States in 2024.

You'd think it paid a lot in taxes, right?

Well it paid precisely $0 in federal income taxes last year.

You want waste and fraud? Look at what some big corporations and the rich are getting away with.
Tesla Paid Zero Federal Income Tax in 2024, Despite $2.3 Billion in Income
This brings Tesla’s average tax rate over the past three years to 0.4 percent.

One thing opponents of the Trump-Musk presidency could do would be to form an informal "shadow government" with groups of advocates focused on every key area of government activity. "Shadow" groups of volunteer politicians and experts would respond to and attack, when necessary, admin actions/words.

Speaker Mike Johnson says Trump’s release of thugs who beat up cops and smeared feces in the Capitol is a “redemption” story.
Johnson’s use of religious language to justify fascism is disgusting.

Elissa Slotkin's "radical pragmatism" echoes my 2018 "Transatlantic Traumas" that the best response to radical right parties would be a political "radical centrism" to reinvigorate liberal democracy with pragmatic solutions responding to the needs of average citizens.

NO mandate
The ‘landslide' that wasn't:

By traditional measures, Trump's win was neither unprecedented nor a landslide.

In fact, he prevailed with one of the smallest popular vote margins since the 19th century and generated little of the coattails of a true landslide.

The ‘Landslide’ That Wasn’t: Trump and Allies Pump Up His Narrow Victory
The latest vote count shows that Donald J. Trump won the popular vote by one of the smallest margins since the 19th century. But Mr. Trump claims a “powerful mandate.”

Gaetz drops out!!! "Our" first victory but far from the end of the battle. The threat of the Constitution actually working has done its job on this one.

Sometimes words make a difference: why are all media referring to Trump's preferences for cabinet officers as "picks" when in fact they are (or will be) nominations? "Picks" make it sound like a final choice and then calls into question the Senate's constitutional advice and consent process.

Debate on why Democrats lost, my summary:
Kamala Harris and the Democratic Party campaigned on a good and accurate picture of the US forest, but an inadequate appreciation of the US trees. As good democracy foresters, they now need to tend to the trees.
