still remember when I first finished reading everything about billy and teddy, it felt like your most impossible dreams were merely casual reality for others. one may dislike the characters but you can never deny their love, or the weight of their bond and how it outweighs all other relationships-

Here was my initial pitch to Marvel, back when it was going to be called "Marvel Academy"! Fun to see how contents have shifted!
MARVEL ACADEMY or MARVEL: FIRST CLASS Anthony Oliveira Editor Sarah Brunstad They’re not the Avengers. They’re not the Fantastic Four, or the Midnight Sons, or the X-Men. Instead they’re the best and future of all of them: ambassadors from each corner of the Marvel universe, learning, sharing, and growing together. Together they will decide what the future will be – and they’ll get a dang degree while they’re doing it! Welcome to the MARVEL ACADEMY – rising marvels of the next generation, a school assembled from the gifts and sponsorship of the great powers of heroism across the universe, encouraging its pupils to choose for themselves what kind of hero they will be and what kind of world they will save. The school is fostered under the oversight of a chartering faculty (perhaps a quasi-Arthurian round table of established heroes – see below), but its students design their own curricula, alongside regular school together (in collaboration with Midtown High/ESU), pulling guest lectures from across the planet, beyond the solar system, and various adjacent planes of existence. But the greatest resource its students have is each other: living in the student dorms, exchanging ideas, learning from different walks of life and realms of being, having fun and finding friendship and love – and very quickly facing down a powerful new roster of young foes, as the next generation of Marvel’s evil rises. These kids are the inheritors of the Marvel Universe’s most illustrious (or infamous!) legacies, grappling with their inheritances and trying to reshape them for a very different age. They must decide for themselves: what does it mean to be a hero? SETTING The school is named for the original Captain Marvel, the lost hero and friend Mar-Vell – and though it is super-positioned in several locations, with windows and doors each facing outward to several iconic Marvel universe locations (think of the mechanics of Howl’s Castle: New York City from the front doors, Kamar-Taj fr… STUDENT ROSTER: CAPTAIN AMERICA (Aaron Fischer): The “Captain America of the Railways” is Carol Danvers’s nomination on behalf of the Avengers (“The Chair of Valor”). He is the ethical heart of the team, but anxious and full of self-doubt both about how to move in a world full of compromises and complicities, and about his own fitness to play with these big guns. Is this where he belongs? What does heroism look like now? Nominator: Avengers/Carol Danvers. DRAMA: Growing feelings for his roommate Kid Juggernaut. Developing friendship with Brielle. Queer solidarity with Escapade. BLOODLINE (Brielle Brooks): Bri is here to represent the magical demimonde (“The Chair of Midnight”). Since the return of Doctor Strange, the unliftable “blessing” that protected her as she grew (to be undetectable by magic) is back and getting worse – not only can magical beings not see her, but she blurs in cameras, etc. As her powers grow, she is becoming the ultimate assassin and creature of the night – but is she losing touch with the world? Nominator: Harkness – or Agatha fails and Scarlet Witch/Blade pull her instead? DRAMA: Big sister relationship with Moon Girl. Something blossoming with Escapade. Vampires are hurt by what we believe – what does she believe? MOON GIRL (Lunella Lafayette): Lunella is our gizmo queen and resident engineer. She will be set apart here from other tech wizards by…her pet dinosaur (living happily in the school stables), but also her insistent passion for justice & ethics in innovation (think Cory Doctorow-esque critiques of the Elon Musk present age: the right to repair, enshittification, AI sludge, privatization, algorithmic racism, walled gardens vs free & open access to information, etc.) – and it is making her powerful enemies. Data wants to be free – but freedom is rarely safe! Nominator: Reed Richards, or Tony Stark. DRAMA: Huge big sister crush on Brielle. Loves outfitting Escapade in gear. Trying very hard to figure out where the sch… Nominator: Emma Frost (or Xavier). DRAMA: Growing distance from Cerebella – wanderlust for adventure at odds with Cerebella’s happiness. Nerding out with Lunella. Feelings for Brielle. RED GOBLIN (or RASCAL) (Normie Osborn): As the heir to both the Osborn legacy and the host of a symbiote from the Venom/Carnage line, Normie is the scion of two monstrous houses, both alike in indignity. Normie is doing his best to transcend these grisly heritages, and his own dire private school silver-spoon proclivities, but his newborn symbiote Rascal is beginning to fear that of the two it is Normie, and not it, that is the more perverse. Nominator: Tricky because his identity is secret, but Spider-Man is best? DRAMA: Struggling to fit in. Strong ideological clash with Aaron. Surprising friendship with Lunella. KID JUGGERNAUT: When a shard of the crimson gem of Cyttorak fell into the hands of a young gay Korean-Canadian student and baker, he was cursed evermore to become a human juggernaut! Cyttorak’s champions are beings of living rage – so what will the demon (and the world at large!) make of this kind and gentle giant? And what does his family legacy mean for his place in the Marvel Universe? Nominator: Cosmic/Elemental heroes – feels like Wiccan & Hulkling, as a magic wielder and the child of Mar-Vell respectively, bless the school with a candidate? Or this character emerges as a candidate only after the AAPI month event. DRAMA: Growing feelings for Aaron. Gentle big brother to hyperactive Lunella.
