So… the @metoffice.gov.uk app redesign - is it just a bit worse or much much worse?

42 x 31 inch mounted print of my award-winning Balbriggan shot for a customer. Love it a lot, looks so good.

Sunrise on Balbriggan Strand on this day last year.

If easterly winds do occur, it will likely have a dramatic slowdown here similar to December. December had a very sunny first 16 days with over 40 hours (very good for that month) then only an extra 19 hours in the rest so it was only a little sunnier than avg overall.

This continues a run of sunny Januaries that's been ongoing since 2022.

2022 - 6th sunniest on record
2023 - 3rd sunniest on record
2024 - 9th sunniest on record
2025 - 4th sunniest on record

*Records since 1942

Will the rest of January 2026 continue in a sunny vein?

No slow down in the January sunshine here in Dublin, even after the very clear northerly winds had passed. The month is on 51.6 hrs after only the first 15 days.

The whole Jan 1991-2020 monthly avg is only 59.9 hrs so have already seen 86% of the average.

An amazing sunrise at Clontarf around this time last year.

A gorgeous start to the day in Clontarf.

Lovely morning in Clontarf. Golden light and reflections.

What a great sky just after sunrise at Portmarnock this morning. If this had appeared 40 minutes prior to it showing, we would have had a serious red sky but alas this was the best it got.

Early hours of this morning in Portmarnock, crescent moon rising beside the kiosk.

That mental GFS 06z wasn't an outlier for Dublin in terms of 850s, probs was at the very upper echelon in terms of synoptics though.

Fairly big spread but more cold perturbations are certainly gathering pace for the second half of January 2026.

Last Wednesday morning's crazy sunrise sky over Portmarnock Beach, look at those clouds!

Serengeti National… I mean Phoenix Park this morning 🌅

A selection of wind gusts > 90 mph in the UK this century so far. No doubt there's more I'm missing. Sure half of them are Needles Old Battery 🥴

It's one year today since I captured this unique perspective of Poolbeg Lighthouse aligned with the Great Sugar Loaf from Dollymount Strand using a telephoto lens. It gave Mount Fuji vibes with its snow cap from the cold spell.

A fiery sky, sun pillar and crepuscular rays over Ireland's Eye from Portmarnock this morning.

*Note 32.2C in July 1921 and July 1934 are converted from whole Fahrenheit.

Also there was a 32.1C at Durrow in August 2022 which has been disregarded.

In the 2025 statement, Met Éireann noted a max of 32.2C at the climatological station Connemara National Park on 13th July 2025.

This makes it the equal 5th highest max temp on record in Ireland.

Current UK January 2026 averages and totals (rain and sun scaled up to whole month based on avg per day for the first 5 days).

Safe to say it's been cold, dry and very sunny so far.
January 6, 2026 at 11:58 AM
Two UK stations have set January record low min temps with recording history of at least 30 years.

These are pretty appalling tbh. Holbeach managed -15.6C in February 2012 showing it's clearly capable of much lower.

It's one year yesterday since I took this shot of Balbriggan Lighthouse, the one that made me officially an award-winning photographer.

Wasn't even the first image I edited and posted after I came home. Was a few weeks later until I did!
