🚨I promised I'd say more on the Royal Society and Elon Musk, so here it is. 🚨

I've resigned my position as Associate Editor at Royal Society's journal Open Science in protest at their lack of action over Elon Musk.

My op-ed in @theguardian.com

Elon Musk is a proven danger to good science, but the Royal Society won’t say so. That’s why I resigned | Kit Yates
It is vital to act, and I urge colleagues to do so. How can we stand by and laud this man while he undermines scientific integrity? asks academic and author Kit Yates

Good piece by @kityates.bsky.social gets to the heart of why yesterday's statement from the Royal Society felt so empty. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

As the brilliant @petraboynton.bsky.social has pointed out, this piece makes no mention of FRS Elon Musk who is directly responsible for much of the threat science is currently under.

If you are looking for a case study of words versus actions in terms of empty corporate EDI then the Royal Society is absolutely it
The Royal Society also stands for equality, diversity and inclusion. Equality is also under attack, and that threatens our global community of scientists – a community that is strongest when everyone can contribute, regardless of who they are or where they come from. royalsociety.org/current-topi...

Diversity is an essential part of the Royal Society’s mission to recognise, promote and support excellence in science, and to encourage the development and use of science for the benefit of humanity.

I'm trying to get more information about the reasons for the RS's inaction, but frankly I find it hard to imagine anything that can counteract the compelling case Dorothy makes here.

The longer that the Royal Society continues to squirm and give lame excuses and shuffle its feet and stare at the floor, rather than actually standing up for science -- which is what it exists to do -- the more its credibility will suffer. Shame, shame on you, Royal Society.
Signature tally is now north of 750. Please keep going so the community can send the strongest possible message to the Royal Society.
Now almost 450 signatories to my open letter calling on the @royalsociety.org to stand up for its values & deal with the widespread concerns raised by Elon Musk's Fellowship. Please consider signing & sharing: forms.gle/miDciq35oxyw...

Nothing to see here. Just Elon Musk FRS retweeting an incendiary statement about @royalsociety.org's Foreign Member Anthony Fauci at the point when Trump removed Fauci's protection.
Need for preemptive pardon amplified when Musk previously tweeted "prosecute Fauci".
