A brilliant new series, and now with video! Huzzah!
How did India’s Greatest Rebellion begin? Why did the dynamic between British and Indian soldiers start to change in the 1850s? How did the British react when the mutiny broke out?

@anitaanand.bsky.social & I launch a brand new series on the Indian Rebellion of 1857.

@charliesavage.bsky.social Just read your excellent piece on the legal issues involved with Venezuela. I wonder what the experts think about the Charter of the Organization of American States. Particularly articles 19, 20, 21.

You all really need to subscribe to @empirepoduk.bsky.social with @anitaanand.bsky.social & @willdalrymple.bsky.social. The John Buchan bonus episode with Murray Pittock was great craic, as he & william went full clanjamfrie. Brilliant stuff. Buchan in the shopping cart.

I finished this miniseries and this morning, one of the perks of being a club member is you get to binge, and it's a typically brilliant mini. The final episode with Anna Funder is a revelation, and not always a pleasant one. Orwell in all his complexity.

Looks as if the second Trump presidency will begin the way the first Trump presidency ended: incompetent acrimonious chaos.

It's the brazen stupidity & ignorance that astounds me.
Spent the day talking to Europeans, and nobody can think of any precedent for what Musk just did to the US Congress. There is no businessman with that much power, the power to stop a routine spending bill, anywhere else in the democratic world.

So this is bluesky...not all the folk I followed & who graciously followed me back are here, but @willdalrymple.bsky.social @aestallings.bsky.social & @joriegraham.bsky.social are, so that's good enough for me -- though Simon Sebag Montefiore's absence stings.

Julia Baird Victoria the Queen, a brilliant read, quite the revelation, especially Albert.

"Albert was a man surrounded by luxury and comfort, but he denied himself rest and allowed workaholism to undermine his health. Had he not, the century might have been better known as the Albertine age."
