Edinburgh <--> Torridon

Both when they had snow and, unsurprisingly, very different.

Hope you are safe and warm wherever you are - P&L

I definitely agree that Edinburgh's streets are dirty and communal bins aren't emptied often enough. Compared to central London or Newcastle Edinburgh city centre is poor. I was out with a visitor around South Bridge in August and the number of bin bags on the street was embarrassing.

We've learnt how resilient and self-sufficient our new community is. Also very supportive of and reliant on each other. Feels very different from our old lives and we're doing our best. 3 day power cut certainly tested us!

It's interesting living in rural Torridon after a lifetime in the city. Nearest dump is an hour away and folk are pretty good at reusing and recycling. A recent Christmas party for nearly 100 folk resulted in 1 small bin bag of landfill with the rest going to reuse, recycle, local compost or fuel.

The Council has tried by various initiatives to tackle the real problem which is the volume of rubbish generated and dumped by the the people of Edinburgh. Persuasion, fines ... nothing works. I'm sure creative suggestions would be welcomed.

I agree with most of the letter writer's points. However, while I recognise they are talking about their own experience, I think Councillor Jack Caldwell has an excellent record on pushing for improvements to Leith Walk. Especially his persistent efforts to get the tram works snagging completed.
