Writing for Astrobites helped me realize my passion for science communication, and I would not have made the jump from academia to the field of science writing without it.

Astrobites is an amazing organization and I highly recommend applying ⭐

This week, NSF added *another* bizarre requirement: Now, applicants must submit official transcripts. The original solicitation -- as in past years -- permitted students to submit *un*official transcripts, which was free for applicants and far simpler.

We'll update our Bite accordingly.

This week (!) is the 30th anniversary of the announcement of 51 Pegasi b, the first exoplanet found orbiting a star like our Sun - since then, we've found over 6,000!

To celebrate, @alexwitze.bsky.social and @nature.com collected some astronomers' favourite planets:

These alien planets are astronomers’ favourites: here’s why

NSF today released instructions for the next round of applicants to its Graduate Research Fellowship Program. A key group—second-year Ph.D. students—is no longer eligible, and students who are still able to apply will face an unusually narrow timeframe. https://scim.ag/3KlQkQk
‘Completely shattered.’ Changes to NSF’s graduate student fellowship spur outcry
The announcement comes months later than usual, leaving many would-be applicants stranded

Idk why but every time I hear about Cecilia Payne - Gaposchkin's defense, I think about Dr. Jamila Peagues who became the first Black woman to earn a PhD in Astronomy (2021) as well Dr. Osase Omoruyi the second Black woman who earned her PhD from Harvard this past summer nearly 100 years later.
Wait a minute.

Why aren't we celebrating the hundredth anniversary of Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin's dissertation.

This is such a cool result!

TOI-561 b is basically the worst possible place to go looking for an atmosphere: too hot, too small, and too old.

But it looks like someone forgot to tell the planet that. Because it has air, anyways 🧪🔭
