Funny how we all just “have to” accept AI as progress even if it’s janky and either has demonstrated no improvements to productivity or outright tanks it, but we never had to accept remote work despite every study showing it improves productivity AND workers lives.

Hmmmmm

This systemic deliberate Russian terror, year after year, generation after generation, country after country. The impact of all this on health and wellbeing… the scale of this, that has never been properly accounted for
Yeah so several major Ukrainian cities are in a complete blackout right now. 0 generation from thermal plants and 0 idea when the power will be back. Just please don’t forget us

Altman has been quite clear about his strategy.

From the 2008 crash he learned that if you bind enough of the economy to your business you can do whatever you like; government will decide the rules no longer apply.

What he's selling is unaccountabilty.
I honestly don’t get the value of this company. They hoover up energy and water. Their product constantly gets things wrong and, in extreme cases, coaches people into suicide.

And it’s all built on what seems to be malicious and vast intellectual property theft.

What does OpenAI offer the world?

Stop “debunking”

Stop playing “spot a bit/ AI”

Look for the humans.

You can’t beat their ability to flood the zone . We’re tired , overwhelmed , and under resourced

We can shift the zone

I really love this Vincent Van Gogh quote:

"To do good work one must eat well, be well housed, have one's fling from time to time, smoke one's pipe, and drink one's coffee in peace."

No romanticizing the starving artist. Van Gogh said UBI all the way.

I can't believe it still bears repeating in 2025, but: preventing NATO expansion in Eastern Europe and limiting military support to Ukraine is supporting Russian imperialism

I think about this with AI too-- there is a set of people who don't just appreciate it, but actually feel entitled to it.

And I think it's because they find the actual experience of critical thought uncomfortable.

Which is a feeling they have been taught to experience as unjustly-inflicted pain.

And I think if we look at the way the right has taken hold of a lot of younger people, it's by telling them that those feelings of discomfort are actually inflicted pain-- a product of violence done to them by politics that make them uncomfortable.

Once again: conflating the ability to use (normative) language with intelligence is an ableist, racist concept that has been used for centuries to exclude Deaf people, ND people, POC, speakers of dialects and minority languages, and so on

And don't get me started on nonhuman animal intelligence

So I think that in fact claims like "But we need new language to talk about what these things do" (paraphrasing Bubeck at the CHM debate in March) really in fact betray the speaker's desire for algorithms to maybe, just maybe be sentient/conscious/etc.

Agreed. Mass market paperback first, as wide and cheap as possible so readers take a chance on a new author without shelling out a ton.
My strongest book-related belief is that the paperback should come first and then the hardback after for people who want a fancy edition.

The reason the Right are so invested in the myth that the arts have no value isn’t because the arts don’t generate wealth (they do); it’s that studying the arts teaches people to imagine better ways of judging the value of an idea than by counting how much money it makes…

I understand the sentiment of "we need to find some way to not all see each other mortal enemies" but it REALLY REALLY needs to be made expressly clear that one side wants to live and be happy and the other side is "that's a line too far and you must suffer and die" and you can't Kumbaya that.
oh no. no. absolutely the fuck not. fuck off.
