Is it even Halloween if there isn’t a bloke dressed as a nun?

I am so tired.

My teen and I have developed an emoji based communication system for non-verbal times, and this is great except when I can’t find other useful emojis in my “regularly used” spot.

Dystopian post-pandemic novels are echoing the dystopian post-nuclear winter novels I devoured in the 80s. I wonder if these will leave lasting nightmares, or if that was a side-effect of teenage imagination.

Today was rough. But… I’m still here.

I survived another September season. It’s hard to believe 12 years have passed since I said goodbye.

As part of moving house, I collected our @ifbookspod.bsky.social collection and donated to a street library. Who moved my cheesy books?

We moved house a week ago, and I’ve had no brain for anything but sorting, tossing, and figuring out where things go. Everything is a mess.

When I was an undergraduate, I used to collect leaves for pathogen samples from these fields. These are good people.
Well we still have famine to look forward to.

How great for us.

Apparently baby whales can gain 90kg in a day. I remember being thrilled when my newborn gained 100g a day.

Grabbing a cheeky coffee after dropping the husband in town, and my usual cafe is takeaway only. I was so thrown by the changes I started questioning what day and time it is, like that somehow changes everything. Existential coffee.

But aren’t they all?

I am 50 years old, why are parent teacher meetings still stressful? My kid is mostly doing fine despite the inherent lack of support for neurodivergence in mainstream schooling.

Oh. That.

Teenaged child will be studying dystopian fiction this term with a close study of 1984. We’re in for a hell of a ride.

Please bathe.
Also remember that Taurus season is not like Duck Season or Wabbit Season, and guns are not required.
According to medieval astrology, Taurus season is a bad time for starting wars, bloodletting, bathing, and anything to do with water. [4/4]

The point of re posting this is not surprise, it’s to keep this message visible.
Can confirm that my NSF grant "How False Beliefs Form & How to Correct Them" was cancelled today because it is "not in alignment with current NSF priorities" Shocking that understanding how people are misled by false information is now a forbidden topic. Our work will continue but at a smaller scale
NSF has posted an “update on priorities.”

They’re canceling all “DEI and misinformation/disinformation” grants.

And the guidance on how to fulfill the longstanding, legally mandated Broadening Participation requirement is utterly incoherent.

Often when people with large platforms and lots of coverage complain of ‘censorship’ - whether for COVID or something else - I suspect what they’re really complaining about is scrutiny.
