Study after study shows that it's remarkably cheap and easy to solve the problems of homelessness and poverty with low-barrier supportive housing and universal basic income, but our own fear that someone, somewhere will get something they didn't "earn" keeps us looking for other (punitive) options.
“In Finland, the number of homeless people has fallen sharply. Those affected receive a small apartment & counselling with no preconditions. 4 out of 5 people affected make their way back into a stable life. And all this is CHEAPER than accepting homelessness.”

It costs a lot less to house people.
Finland ends homelessness and provides shelter for all in need - scoop.me
In Finland, the number of homeless people has fallen sharply. Why? The country applies the "Housing First" concept agains homelessness.

In happy news, daughter would like for her 5th birthday … a plumcot tree. Half apricot, half plum. I’m delightedly researching.

Hey games friends, I’ve got a very musical nearly-five-year-old home sick. Any music-based games you recommend? Bonus for iOS rather than steam?

The new modern folklore can be accessed by creating a business instagram account. Your feed instantly fills with creators advising you on appeasing The Algorithm and so much of it is just advice on living under the fae and catering to their capricious, unknowable whims.

I continue to write tiny essays on personal style as a relief from everything out there. Today an artist/designer who makes clothes which are utterly transparent about their provenance

I went to the library to read old Vogues today and didn’t expect a gut punch like this - editors letter from July 1945

“We have learned that national isolation means international chaos, and war … if we have not learned those things we are blind, deaf and without heart.

Amid the scarcity of decent fabric almost everywhere it does the heart good to visit the egg boutique in London. It’s not cheap but every textile in the place is beautiful and heavy and will last 15 years of good wear.

This is it 100% - there is no such thing as the objectively best garment to fit everyone. We all have different body geometry, taste, narratives in our head about who we want to be in the world.
Instead of thinking there is a "best" slim-straight jean or a "best" budget jean, you should develop a vocabulary for clothing. This helps you understand details and identify what *you* like. So this thread is to help you expand your denim vocabulary.

An important part of my day job these days seems to be writing about people who dress interestingly. Here Renata Molho, queen of Italian fashion writing and friend of Armani and Romeo Gigli, who smashes together joy and dignity in a delightful way:

A colloquial (and sadly outdated) German version of “let’s go” or “let’s get this show on the road” is Satteln wir die Hühner. It means “Let’s saddle the chickens!”

We're making a game where you play a courier rider in 13th century Mongolia

No combat, just you, the horse(s) you've tamed, bred and trained and the vast wilderness.

Would you play this?

I feel like this would work across many areas of life, not just dating
If you’re ever unsure of if you’re doing something stupid romantically, take a large photo of Grace Jones and tell her what you’re doing. Explain to Ms Jones that you’re sad because you’re being ghosted by a mid ugly bartender who doesn’t own a bed frame. Go ahead. Tell her. See how that feels.

Matsushige Kakaricho, a civil servant rabbit from the moon, has a sweet potato body, radish ears, and a lotus root bag. (The mascot for the town of Matsushige, was in Tokyo yesterday.)

Ah, happy to see one of my favourites from the other place here. An unlikely Japanese mascot every day.
Kamarin, the mascot of Kamaishi City, has flames from a blast furnace in one hand, a local flower in the other, and a fish on his head.
