London games/clothes/gardens.
I was reminded of this conversation today as for 2 years I’ve been ‘enlivening’ school dropoff by shouting Big Tree! every time we pass one particularly large yew. Small has never not rolled her eyes, but today I was distracted when we passed and she seemed genuinely weirded out it hadn’t happened 🤷‍♀️

I get this, I really do, but I also have a kid who goes completely loopy on too much sugar, and after a couple of years of rampaging til 2am and having to get up for school the next day, desolate with a sugar hangover - I love people who offer candy alternates as well.

Or to put it another way, welcome to your reading glasses era. They’re essential for fine sewing in your 40s

Do you have one of those magnifying glasses on a stand people use for soldering? Also useful for this.

Do they put a full glass of water on the floor and score you on how much water is left after some hectic cornering?

I am so curious about the win state of tram driving. Is it smooth driving, nice for passengers, is it speed runs, are there style points?

I always end up with at least one box that is labelled “I dunno, stuff?” for all the things that didn’t fit into sensible categories

Totally. I would never have described it as a ritual until my sister and I got married and other people with opinions about what to have for lunch arrived on the scene.

Ah I hope the windswept tree that leans away from the sea is still standing just near where you took that picture. A landmark of my childhood visits to grandparents there

(Then I married into a Malaysian family and now there is a whole list of particular dishes at particular hawker centres we need to visit every time we’re back in Penang)

Most of my culture is food culture. For us it would be lunches at my mum’s. Even after she’s gone we still put out a salad + four types of cheese + two types of cured meat + olives + bread and woe betide any in-law who suggests that’s too many different things on the table. They are wrong.

They’re hybrids - deep red flesh of plums, sweetness and aroma of apricots. I’m looking forward to the eating!

My lecturers were a little non-plussed, but I had a lovely time designing prints based on faber&faber poetry book covers and corners of Edward Gorey prints, and making graphic Ts with fragments of TS Eliot on.

I mean, I designed my degree collection based on what I imagined the people who wrote personal ads in the LRB might look like, and I maintain that there’s some incredibly ahead of the curve and conceptual dressing in these spaces. There are some fierce dressers among the BL regulars
