How about this one? What do you call a dentist's office staff that calls to confirm on Thursday for an appointment on the following Monday, only to tell us on arrival (1.5 hour drive each way) that the dentist is out on vacation for the week - with no appointment openings for 2 weeks?

What do you call a US post office that hasn't delivered a single piece of mail to a locked street box for 4 months? (We even sent mail to ourselves to double-check.) I am trying to muster kindness and understanding as the postmaster keeps promising that everything is fixed.

One delightful and unexpected feature of scaled quail life is that coveys stick together for the better part of a year, so it's typical to see 10-13 quail when they're out foraging. Just now I saw what appeared to be 2 combined coveys (about 25 birds) scratching under the feeder. Amazing!

When two people on a social media platform concurrently and independently make disparaging comments about Cybertrucks, you know you're in the right place.

I bought Thomas Dolby's UK single "One of Our Submarines"/"She Blinded Me with Science" and the LP "The Golden Age of Wireless" at the beginning of 1983 in London. I find myself haunted by that chilly, angular, melancholic-yet-upbeat soundscape again these days. Sounds and smells - direct pathways*

Despite all the sparks of hope igniting around the country, I am having a hard week and now my brain is sabotaging me with the chant of children clamoring, "We want cake. Where's our cake?" I hear you, kids. I really do.

Anyone who says I'm not popular hasn't been paying attention to my bird feeders.

What the hell? #Priya changed their ginger pickle (with garlic) recipe without even bothering to mention it And I Am Upset. Why does the sun keep on shining? There is so little reliable perfection in the world and this one taste was a constant joy in my life for about 40 years.

Every now and then I remember that I was informed of my dad's death via social media, and that still freaks me out.

Lately I've been very concerned about the health of someone I admire a great deal. Today I caught myself composing condolence letters in my mind. What a strange and ridiculous dodge from anxiety. Just stop it already!

@tmbg.bsky.social's between-set playlist juxtaposition made me laugh on Friday. It suggested that, according to The Divinyls, Sandie Shaw's girl did, in fact; she just failed to arrive.

This is a GREAT response.
hundreds of engineers, teachers, or outreach workers sounds good. I'd like a "full force" helping of that, please

Octoberfest, but Taos Ski Valley style - it's still September, the mariachi band has wrapped up, and the DJ just played Hotel California and 25 or 6 to 4. (Oops. Originally posted on my side-site on here this afternoon.)

I hear the President has decreed that it is possibly a crime to refer to Americans as "fascists," but "fascism" is a word that has a relatively clear meaning that's worth understanding. Here's how an official publication of the US Army defined "fascism" in 1945.
The central point is that when fascism came to America it wouldn't call itself that, nor would it be wearing a swastika. It would call itself "patriotic" and "100% American."

Found out yesterday that our mailing address was never added to the system, explaining why we haven't received mail (except for 2 packages, intercepted by the carrier who hadn't registered our address) in over a month. Birthday cards for both. Sniff-sniff. Hope they ever find their way back here.
