And this marks our 1000th strip! In a world where it seems like the newspaper comic strip page is the same dozen strips forever, it's good to know there's actually a wider variety, a deeper history and a more interesting art scene than just Garfield and Beetle Bailey.

Comic strip "Hometown Happenings." A cat sees a roll of thread roll by and pounces on in. Unfortunately, there was a needle in the roll, and the cat gets a painful poke. Their owner apologizes. I was unable to find a credited author, and none of the strips were signed.

March 14th, 1913 as seen in the Daily Gate City
Comic strip "Wags, the Dog that Adopted a Man." A strip about Wags, a stray dog with a can tied to its tail that has decided an upper class man is his human, which the man isn't too pleased about. The man tries to drown Wags by pushing it off a pier and dropping a rock on it in the water, but both dog and rock land in another man's rowboat, who knocks the upper class man into the water as payback. Wags is oblivious to his human's attempts at murder.

Sunday activity comic strip "Night Lights & Pillow Fights." First, the comic within a comic, "Mudpie." A girl asks her brother if he's actually talking to God when he's alone, but the brother struggles to explain it and walks off. Next, a poem titled "The Old Pirate." Full text: "When I was young (for now I'm old) / I dreamt of diamonds, pearls, and gold! / Huge Treasure Chests of all that stuff! / I'd be happy, I knew, if I had enough... / So... I stole me a ship, and I set to sea! / No crew to pay? No way! Just me! / For all of my life, to all ends of the Earth, / I went in search, and search, and search... / Of all the greatest, shiniest stuff! / And I didn't stop until I GOT ENOUGH. / Then I built me a Tower, 100 feet tall. / And on all four sides, a thick stone wall. / Then I sat there for a while, and counted my gold... / Just Me, alone... 'till I got old. / Maybe I should have taken some time way back when. / Just a moment to have met a few folks now and then. / 'Cause Gold's awfully cold now, as I near my end... / and I'd trade all I've got for just ONE TRUE FRIEND."
