I can't stress this enough: if someone takes their own life because of fear of legal repression or criminalization, they are a victim of the state. Deaths of despair are social murder, a direct result of having a society that isn't designed to care for the needs of the people in it.

Reasons why unhoused people "decline shelter," based on my experiences working in the shelter and harm reduction realms for several years, a thread:

- the shelter is not safe for them due to race, gender, sexuality, ability/health, trauma, language, creed, age, affiliation, etc.
