I never realized how awful the original of hallelujah is. Thank God it’s been covered so often. #XPNcountdown

If #XPNcountdown was your first taste of the great weirdness of @wxpnfm.bsky.social , just wait for #XPNTNB.

The end of the countdown means it’s proper holiday time and nearly time for Robert Drake and Christmas Eve cooking.
While the #XPNcountdown is wrapping up, the REAL countdown is underway until Dec 24 when I takeover @wxpnfm.bsky.social for 24 nonstop live hours during my 33rd annual edition of The Night Before on XPN! #XPNTNB 🎄🎅

My 11 year old thinks Number 1 will be “Fix You” by Yellowcard. Her emo mother (and father (are proud).

Ok so in some order we’re going to get Hurt, Watchtower and Hallelujah.

What’s the other? Natural Woman?

The #XPNcountdown has become a highlight of my year. My kids learn a lot about music. I doom scroll less. Thanks @wxpnfm.bsky.social for being weird & awesome. Never change.

I really thought Whitney would be Number 1. Or at least Top 3.

It’s gonna be Springsteen covering Bob Dylan or some nonsense. #XPNcountdown

Just said the same thing. I’m shocked it’s this low.
Should be higher, IMHO.

I get most of my love of music from my mom, and love a lot of her music, and we listened to a TON of WXPN.

But I vividly remember as a kid that I LOVED this version of “Mad World”. And she HATED IT.

(Same with anything by David Gray)

Hot take: The actual original version of this song (the Beatles) stinks. This is way worse. What on Earth is this? #XPNcountdown

If we’re doing fun versions of rap classics, then Ben Folds’ version of “Bitches Ain’t Shit” should be way higher than whatever this is. #XPNcountdown

I’ve heard this cover of In Your Eyes before but never would’ve thought of it. It’s effing outstanding. #XPNcountdown

It’s interesting to think what this #XPNcountdown list would be if people made their Top 10s from a pre-populated database of covers. Like if you scrolled through a massive list of covers, your list would be totally different from one off the top of your head.

I know many XPN folks despise Dave Matthews Band. But an all-time memory:

DMB performed this cover of “All Along the Watchtower” at Veteran’s Stadium as the encore to a show. And they were joined on stage by Carlos Santana & The Roots in the pouring rain.

I’ll never forget it.

Although there has to be a reason they’re using this kinda mid acoustic version. Some of the live versions are MUCH BETTER. #XPNcountdown

File this David Gray song - one of my absolute favorites - under the “I had no idea this was a cover,” category.

My wife had one very specific request in the #XPNcountdown: “Fix You” by Yellowcard.

I figured it would make the list but now I’m getting worried for her as we get into the 200s.

Ben Folds is maybe my all-time favorite artist. This is a phenomenal cover but not one I included on my list.

That would be “Bitches Ain’t Shit”.

I can’t believe this is so low. #XPNcountdown
The Fugees covering ‘No Woman No Cry’ in the 400s? What if I told you Bob Dylan sat in on the recording session? #XPNCountdown

Guster is one of my favorite bands, and I totally forgot about this cover of Nothing But Flowers. (Talking Heads are another one of my favorites.)

This may have made my list if I remembered it. #XPNcountdown

The first year I listened to #XPNTNB I remember thinking this Groove Lily thing was so bizarre. Now it’s a highlight of Christmas Eve.

As always, that was crazy fun in an otherwise never ending week of rain and cold. So glad to have @wxpnfm.bsky.social and things like #xpncountdown.

See you on Christmas Eve #TheNightBefore, @djrobertdrake.bsky.social.

I’m sure I’ll think of others, but “Marching Bands of Manhattan” is the wildest snub for me of the top of my head. I like a few other songs off Plans better, but I’m shocked it didn’t appear at all. #xpncountdown
