Love Actually (2003)
December 23, 2024 at 3:19 PM
Today was not the best day as I found out that I am losing my job. I am seeking new opportunities in the Seattle area (or remote). I've worked with tech content, employee communications, SharePoint, and a lot more over the last 20 years and would love for my friends to keep me in mind for new roles.

This the league that I've spent a lot of time on this past year. And it keeps going: Skate Prom this Wed, playoffs in two weeks, and we're already deep in planning next season. Friends who know kids in Seattle who can skate, let me know!

I was at a roller derby tournament this weekend, so I couldn't see Thunderbolts* in the first few days. They're really spoiling the actual title in headlines now. Oh well!

My connection and gratitude to Americorps is completely selfish: Without it, my future wife would never have come to Seattle and met me. I can only hope that if we emerge from the other end of this that something even better will resume its place in our society.

When Team Democracy is back in charge it will be critical to remember what the billionaires did to this country when it was defenseless.

Every American needs to read this. This is our country. This is who we are and this is what we are doing. Next time I see or hear anyone say anything about “well, but we need to keep criminals off the streets…” I’ll be showing them this and asking them what a criminal is.

I was stuck in a freezing cell without explanation despite eventually having lawyers and media attention. Yet, compared with others, I was lucky

It's been a not-great Friday. But you know what is a mood lifter? Junior #rollerderby! Come watch our league's latest home bout this Saturday night in White Center with two games vs. Whatcom County's Subdued City Rollers! (My kid isn't skating.) Tickets at southside-revolution.square.site

Let's just say that somehow we reverse these federal job cuts. How many temporary HR professionals will they need to take on to untangle the paperwork of regaining benefits, etc.?

I wasn't disconnected this weekend, but I spent it shuttling junior #rollerderby players around Santa Cruz, witnessing their bonds on and off the track. We will overcome the greater challenges. These teens are polite and perceptive, smart and creative, open-hearted and fierce. #derbybluesky

We've had a lot of hyperbolic reactions to political change especially over the last 20+ years and yet every worry I read now sounds so plausible. I guess fascist techbros and oligarchs will party on our corpses as the world burns. Enjoy what we've got while it's left, I guess.
There’s a real chance that we staring down a new pandemic in the form of bird flu. It could never happen or happen in the coming months. And we are in the process of decimating our core national public health and infectious disease service.

Even though my kid didn't have practice, I needed to stop by the rink yesterday to do some league business. We'd already had a weekend of games (bout Sat, scrimmage Sun), but watching level 2 skaters scrimmage was self care. The kids will be all right if we continue to fight for them. #rollerderby

“The Gulf of America” thing is so stupid, it’s strangely comforting to me. I can’t really explain it. Maybe it’s that even if I end up being executed for the crime of virtue signaling I will have lived my life never, even at my stupidest, having been that dumb

Facebook made me auto follow Trump, too. I reported his profile as "Scam or Fraud" once, and they sent me 21 notifications telling me they weren't removing his profile.

Unfortunately, I still have connections through FB and IG that are not replicated elsewhere. But this is dirty stuff.

I finished my 63rd book of the year last night (Nothing Like the Movies). I am capable of more -- I read 77 in 2023 and 88 in 2022 before slowing things down this year. But I feel like I read a decent amount.

But my wife is a wonder. And she set up her 2025 reading journal with spots for 150 books!

Probably my final book of 2024 - book 140. And wow! What a great one to end on. I wasn’t expecting much since I hadn’t heard anyone talk about it - but this turned out to be one of my favorite romances of the year. #booksky #romancebooks

Reposting my old speculation about the aftermath of "Christmas Wrapping":

She probably talked awkwardly with him in the aisle as she tried to figure out if they were buying one or two bags of cranberries. This continued as they chatted in a slow line of folks buying hard liquor and cigarettes. 1/

Did you know that if you manually add captions to web videos, you can edit them so the words actually make sense before you post? It's performative #accessibility if you don't bother to ensure meaning for people who need the captions.

I bought a couple of things at Ross Dress for Less last night and was offered a senior discount. I am barely into my 50s. It turns out they start giving a discount at 55! This coupled with the AARP sending me mail starting when I was 49 -- why are they all trying to put me out to pasture?
