An Unrivaled spokesperson tells me that its Philadelphia doubleheader delivered $2 million in revenue to the league, including over $1 million in ticket revenue and $400,000 in merchandise sales at the arena.
The thing I’ll remember most about last night isn’t the play on the court. It’s how much money was made.

Want to judge women’s sports as a business? I do too. So let’s talk about a fundamental rule of economics.

How can you measure demand when there’s no supply?

Unrivaled’s Philadelphia spectacle delivers not just a big crowd, but a profitable one
Comcast Spectacor's chief financial officer told Unrivaled's leaders, "we think that you’ll be able to sell out this building, and we’ll all be profitable from it.” A record crowd proved that right.

marina here is just the perfect example of how there’s no “wrong” or “bad” way to be speaking out — like not everyone has to perfectly articulate & defend their own unique perspective on what’s going on, it can truly be this simple! hope the uswnt & nwsl are looking to unrivaled as an activism model
Renee Montgomery asks Marina Mabrey about the Crashout Jar and people holding up money for it, Marina freaks out a bit when she finds out she got a tech during the game but says any money in the crashout jar will be donated to support Minneapolis

Official from Unrivaled:

21,490 fans in the building tonight.

That’s an all-time record for the highest-attended regular season professional women's basketball game ever.

Also, a record for a professional basketball game — men’s or women’s — at Xfinity Mobile Arena.

Paige Bueckers is not afraid to use the platform her fame has given her - and right now, that matters even more with events in her home state of Minnesota.

She spoke about that on the eve of stepping on to another big stage, the Unrivaled showcase in Philadelphia:

Basketball star Paige Bueckers is not afraid to use the platform her fame has given her
Bueckers grew up near Minneapolis, the site of recent ICE raids and the killings of Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti. She spoke from the heart as she prepared to play in Unrivaled's big games here.

NEW: I spoke to women's sports bar owners about how they are showing up as sites of resistance—including on the frontlines in Minnesota. "Sport becomes the shared language—bringing people together and fueling social change, just as it has throughout history.”
how women's sports bars are resisting ICE
"These bars are gathering places that uplift and celebrate communities that have long been underserved and undervalued."

Sarah Strong became the third-fastest UConn player to reach 1,000 points, doing so in 59 games. Only Paige Bueckers and Maya Moore did so faster (55 games). (Strong is, notably, not even averaging 30 minutes per game this season)

A landmark CBA signed in ‘83 gave NBA players 53% of GROSS revenue starting in ‘84, and ‘84 NBA revenue was similar to estimated WNBA revenue in 2022.

So why is it that 42 years after the men earned their fair share of GROSS revenue the same league expects women to settle for a % of NET revenue?
Former WNBA player Sonia Chase & former NBAPA Executive Dr. Tamika Tremaglio discuss the behind the scenes of the WNBA CBA negotiations, the revenue sharing specifics keeping the two sides apart & whether a work stoppage is the only thing that’ll get a deal done.

Thread: The NWSL has established a set of criteria to designate players "High Impact" through a criteria of national team minutes, awards, and marketability. It's controversial because it bypasses collective bargaining, limits player agency, and uses an arbitrary player valuation standard.
