June 28, 2021. Mekelle. A day when the sky held its breath. When hope marched through silence and sacrifice sang through the streets. To the women and men who gave it all for dignity and freedom: may your courage echo for generations.

Teaching in prison is one of the greatest blessings of my life. Journey of humility, vulnerability, intellectual rigor, and deep love. Just wrapped up my summer term course—The Art of Good Trouble: Policy, Politics, and Advocacy—after 14 powerful class sessions over 7 weeks. Onward!

Zohran Kwame Mamdani! 🇺🇸❤️✊🏾

At just 33 years old, this democratic socialist state legislator from New York has pulled off a political earthquake: winning the primary election for Mayor of New York City. His campaign was bold, his policies visionary, and his integrity unwavering.

Honored to welcome 2 of Tigray, Ethiopia’s most impactful humanitarians, Rita Kahsay of @irobanina.bsky.social & Dr. Dawit Kassa of EASE (Extending Access & Systems Enhancement), to Massachusetts! Their commitment to rebuilding our native war-torn Tigray is matched only by their impatient optimism.

Watched this evening’s powerful presser welcoming Rümeysa Öztürk at Boston Logan Airport. Congrats to Rümeysa & her legal team, including Mahsa Khanbabai & @aclum.bsky.social (led by exec dir Carol Rose & legal dir Jessie Rossman). Ultimately, legal arguments prevailed in her release. #mapoli

Congratulations to His Holiness Leo XIV, 267th Pope of the Catholic Church. An American & Augustinian, he begins his role with a call for social justice, bridge building, & peace. As an Orthodox Christian, I pray he advances Pope Francis’ legacy of ecumenicalism, humility, & joy.

Rümeysa Öztürk is an accomplished scholar, valued community member, & my constituent who is now Trump's political prisoner.

I spoke with @slate.com to discuss my meeting with her, Republicans' attacks on Medicaid, and how we're fighting back against their callous agenda.

Molly McGovern lived joyfully & purposefully. Though her 23 years were too short & marked by cancer, she never let it define her. Today’s funeral was a moving celebration of her life, as shown by all who gathered. My condolences to @repmcgovern.bsky.social, Lisa, & their son Patrick. #mapoli

Harvard University strategically utilizes a cadre of conservative lawyers to counteract policies from the Trump Administration. It makes total sense. Others should look into this approach. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/02/u...

Pope Francis demanded peace & aid to my native Tigray when no religious leader in Ethiopia would say its name. Worked for peace in South Sudan, Congo, Ukraine, etc. Called Gaza’s Catholics daily. Reminded us of our duty to each other regardless of identity & faith. Rest in power.

Massachusetts leaders @markey.senate.gov, @pressley.house.gov and @repmcgovern.bsky.social visited Rümeysa Öztürk in detention.

What they saw was denial of medical care and unsafe conditions - Rümeysa's detention is cruel and unconstitutional, and she must come home.

Today — Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day & Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom HaShoah) — we should honor the victims of two of the last century’s darkest atrocities. It’s imperative that we learn from history, confront hate, end & prevent atrocities, & hold perpetrators accountable.

This is how democracies crumble—when politicians defy the rule of law and dismantle judicial independence. The Trump Administration’s actions against Rümeysa Öztürk are not just cruel—they are unconstitutional. wcvb.com/article/rumy...

Roman Catholic Pope Francis knew that to follow Christ is to love all. He radiated joy, humility, and compassion—centering the marginalized, praying for peace, and advancing unity. As an Orthodox Christian, I honor his impact and service. May he rest in power and eternal grace.
