I'm not sure that I accept that this is inevitable. The future described sucks. I don't want that world. Does anyone else? I mean, we can say no. We do have agency. We don't have to let a handful of deeply shitty men decide this for the rest of us.

So why are we all going along with this? Are we all looking forward to the Great Tech Depression where most of us have no means of making an income? I noticed there were no solutions offered for everyone made obsolete, just a wildly urgent warning not to be those people.
February 12, 2026 at 4:35 AM
I found this really grim. Some of the worst people on the planet are pushing this tech hard, and that should alarm us. The dystopian potential described is the far likelier outcome here, where we see power and the abuse of it concentrated even further to the deranged billionaire class.

When I got the contract to write a history of concentration camps in 2014, I hoped to keep the US from ending up here. That didn't work out! But now it's critical to understand how much is already in process and the enormity of what's coming. The sooner we act to stop it, the more people we'll save.

Also in this club for the most part.
I think becoming an avid birder was a solid choice: early riser, minimal social contact, handful of gentle (okay, bland) snacks? Good to go.
I can still travel and eat some spice, but I'm only 50. I'm sure those wild activities will settle out as I age. 😁

I'm sorry that you also have firsthand experience.
I don't even have a really severe form of LC. I can manage my symptoms with meds enough that I can still work and get around. So many are not that lucky.
Framing masks as extreme makes me so mad. We need to be more cautious, not less. Ugh.

From Assigned Male Comics. Her stuff is great.

Thank you! This! "Extreme"? Seriously?
I got Long Covid from one mild infection. It's more than just the immediate risk they are addressing with that mask and they are very wise to do so.
It enrages me when media frames logical health precautions this way. It's so irresponsible.

I got Long Covid after one mild infection. It changed my life in all sorts of not great ways. Every time our media frames basic health precautions as "extreme", they are actively promoting misinformation. This virus IS a big deal. It's very dangerous and we've got 6 years of data now as receipts.
Since the early days of the space program, astronauts have quarantined before missions because any illness could be disastrous. It’s eminently logical — not “extreme” — for athletes who’ve trained their WHOLE LIVES for one event to take similar precautions in order to stay in peak physical condition

For most people, the pandemic days of masking are behind us. In certain corners of the Winter Olympics, though, things still look a lot like they did in Covid times. Some athletes are taking extreme measures to stay healthy. n.pr/4akK70l

As someone who got Long Covid after one mild infection, the use of the word "extreme" in this context is so ass-backwards it's laughable. We've got 6 years of data now and it's pretty apparent that the only thing extreme here is our collective willful ignorance on how serious covid is. It's wild.

Aww, lil Spanky is so desperate to change the subject. Look how hard he is working to whip up a nonexistent issue that doesn't need solving. It's almost like he thinks overreacting to the article will make it go away...
Sorry, Spanky. This one is going to stick.

Sorry for anyone who didn't bother to learn Spanish in high school but is now mad that they don't understand it. It was right there dude. It's not some secret code being kept from you.

It's fine not to know stuff but don't expect the world to revolve around just the things you choose to know.

I think they have gotten a lot further with that hijacking than most of us realize. I agree that we need to split this party as quickly as possible.

I am familiar with Thiel and his history. I did not intend my comment to imply that he is not very very dangerous, or that being bananas makes him less competent, but his ideas and motivations are not sane. I share your horror that he has gotten as far as he has, and I 100% agree that he is evil.

I didn't see this on #SuperbOwl Sunday, but just last week, this beauty was right beside the path as I was leading 20-odd kidlets out on a nature walk. Not the greatest pic because I was wrangling kidlets who were 🤯 at seeing an actual owl, but it works with the theme.

Fellow birder here. All the hope (isn't that the thing with feathers, after all?) and optimism that we will get back to sharing those pleasures soon.

Right? I was just thinking how delicious it was that Fanjoy is the one bringing this. 😁
Bruce is not pulling his punches, eh? Good! PP deserves all of this and more. It's a basic expectation and deeply suspicious that he hasn't got the clearance yet. No more excuses. Get it done or get out.

Yup. Don't get smug or complacent, Canada. That could be us SO easily. Or any western democracy, for that matter. The same elements are present in all of our nations.
And take care, American friends. Please know that many of us see and appreciate how many of you are fighting hard.
