White Sands is the largest gypsum dunefield in the world. Located in the Tularosa Basin, flanked by two mountain ranges, water runoff accumulates in the basin. During the last ice age, 12,000-24,000 years ago, rain/snow melt was abundant, washing vast quantities of gypsum into the basin.
