Talked to a prof about the thesis I'm supposed to write in a year or so. He told me that he hasn't heard such an interesting idea for years but he can't possibly be my advisor on his own, may I please look for someone to co-advise this thing 🥲
Gut feeling: my dark past is going to catch up with me 🙈

My book comes out today! And it's reasonably priced! Whoooooooooooo! It's about linguistics! It's about extreme metal! It's about the Asia Pacific and flows of global subcultures! I'm really proud of it and I hope you all enjoy.

The mini decided that he wants to be able to read & write Hungarian as well and started copying a book he likes... that too during his autumn break 😊

Last summer, I once had to skip my favourite translation class because of a school holiday.
This year, I came home from another class just to find #1 teaching the mini Hungarian orthography 😆
I guess we're making progress (yay!)

POV how to prepare for an interpreting assignment - coffee and cold drinks are apparently bad for your voice, dry wine and cognac, however....🤔🤔🤔

Interpreting prof today: if you want to train multitasking, try listening to podcasts while playing on your phone.

Well, usually I do some laundry or cooking, but happy to oblige, if this makes me any better 😆

Preparing for some hours in the booth tomorrow means revising German articles as those are the first to fly out of the window if things get fast 🫠 completely useless features of the language if you ask me

Historically, the word 'nest' consists of two parts.

The part 'ne-' is related to 'nether', while '-st' is related to 'sit'.

The distant ancestor of 'nest' meant "place to sit down".

'Nest' is also related to Spanish 'nido' and its Romance relatives.

The fact that Kiswahili jumatatu is Monday and Persian سه‌شنبه is Tuesday makes sense (different base days to count off of) but is still confusing me because of the *numbers* being the same 😐

Something lovely for the weekend! A very good boy! 🐾🐕😍

An amazing 3,400 year-old ancient Egyptian mechanical dog carved from ivory. This leaping hunting dog opens and closes its mouth as if barking, by using a lever below its chest.

So I now taking this up a notch and doing it while cooking or doing the laundry (on the balcony. neighbours must think I'm a basket case) 😅
So...in preparation for my next term I'm trying to do some 15-20 mins of shadowing in DE/EN/HU each day & am now looking for decently paced podcasts, discussions, lectures etc to work w/. Also as it's summer holidays and I'll have to do it mostly w/ the boys around, content needs to be kid friendly🤔

#MiniHungarianLanguageLesson: weddings

there are several words in hungarian for weddings but the two i want to talk about today are "esküvő" and "lakodalom"

"esküvő" (a noun) comes from "esküszik" (a verb), meaning "takes an oath", so a literal translation could be "oath-taker"
