It just seems really shitty to me that we'd have some sort of AI-powered vibes-based age verifier that arbitrarily decides that if you have too young of a face, then you can't do consenting adult things until you feed your passport picture into the data breach machine, what's the fuckin' point

There are two possibilities: that this whole thing is vibey nonsense and has no real safety purpose, in which case why subject anyone to it in the first place...
Or it's based on reliable data that definitively indicates users' ages, which is data they shouldn't have or be handling as a chat app

I'm not sure "the majority of you will never have to see age verification, because we already have enough information from other sources to verify you're an adult without you even doing anything" is exactly the reassuring pat on the shoulder that Discord thinks it is right now...

Nobody is saying that children or non-consenting adults should be subjected to adult content. But we've already had systems in place to flag and tag such content for years now, and there are severe (and legitimate) concerns about the few private entities handling this age verification for companies.

I'm reasonably certain both companies are on the same trajectory, severely ratcheting down their own communities in ways that violate privacy and overstep the common-sense approaches we've taken in the past and are a direct answer to a few loud right-wing puritans howling about the children.

It's one thing to have copilot write some filler code for you or to make a silly meme once in a while, but when it becomes your whole identity, when you fight harder in defense of the fascist plagiarism machine than you ever did for the makers and artists you claimed to really support...you lost us.

That's what I take an issue with...the notion that people can't be held accountable for the heinous shit they believe, say and vote for, just because "politics" is enshrined, for whatever reason, as a sacred unassailable thing. You can call any hate you want "politics" and get it shielded that way.

Usually, strict "no-tolerance no-politics" spaces aren't just trying to steer the scope of discussion, they're also saying that just because a person wants to run down protesters, support secret police kicking down doors, make it illegal to be queer, etc. doesn't mean they can't be in that space.
