Shutter Paw’s Top 15 Games of the Year - 2025

Despite 2025 being a bit of a shiter, there were plenty of games to get stuck into. Here’s my top fifteen of the year. Thanks to anyone who has read or watched my stuff this year. I genuinely appreciate it!

The news about Inverse is awful. Shannon took a chance on me despite the fact I had one published piece to my name, and I’ll always be grateful for that. Solidarity with her and the Inverse gaming section. Another talented team gone, and for what?
after flying back from Vegas last week, I was just laid off from Inverse today. I'm open to connecting over email at shannon@flashinfics.com and I'm definitely still in the writing and editing space. Expect a more in-depth explanation coming soon in my Updater newsletter. shannonliao.substack.com

It’s #115Day, which gives me an excuse to get sentimental about Call of Duty Zombies. Not that I need an excuse, of course, it’s part of my brand at this point.

There are many reasons why Call of Duty is in its current state. At the top of the list is Bobby Kotick and the culture he instilled: a new game every year, developer crunch and churn, and chasing profit over what was right for COD.

He set the fuse and shut the door behind him.

Bobby Kotick claims Activision, Call of Duty, and consoles are doing so poorly it proves he was right to sell Activision Blizzard to Microsoft for $69 billion. https://bit.ly/4bwMQ8Y

My Astra Malorum review is now live!

Black Ops 7 Zombies continues to impress me. It improves upon Black Ops 6 in pretty much every area. But did Astra Malorum stick the landing during a chaotic period for Call of Duty?

every time i’m reminded that this corner of games media has everything in common with gamergate, and they get to come down on whoever they like because they dress their harassment and abuse up in enough social justice rhetoric to make it sound justifiable.

i had to see more sarcasm again about this, from that crowd of people, so i’m sharing this post again.

how they all treated me, circled the wagon, ridiculed this, and continue to treat this… is evil.

The Return of Tomb Raider

We’ll need to wait and see how Legacy of Atlantis and Catalyst turn out, but it’s exciting to finally have new #TombRaider games on the horizon after so long.

The future feels bright; at last, the Survivor becomes the Legend.

Look all jokes aside I think a game that retailed for $50 and had a reasonable, sustainable budget sweeping the awards is probably a good message to send to the industry, if it's even capable of listening.

Truly nothing could have captured the vibe of the Game Awards better than reviving Star Wars Knight of the Old Republic seconds before it's heavily implied Geoff Keighley fucked Miss Piggy. You just can't have one without the other and still call it the Game Awards

Call of Duty and The Colossus of Activision

The uncomfortable truth is that the future of Call of Duty is entirely out of our hands. I’d like to think the reception to this year’s effort will make a difference, but a Zursa can’t change its hives.

That doesn't mean we should give up. 🧟

HORSES is stylish, disturbing, and so very timely. Best fiver I have spent in a long time!

The nonsense from digital stores like Steam and Epic is concerning. Thankfully, GOG has some sense.

It runs like a charm on Steam Deck via the Heroic Launcher, btw. 🐴
Yesterday, the Epic Games Store decided at the last minute not to distribute the game, after having previously approved a release build. HORSES is otherwise now available on GOG, Itch, and Humble for $4.99. www.horses.wtf
