And this is VERY clear and is how rhetoric works and it drives me nuts that we still keep having this "argument". It's not an argument! No one saying that is unaware of historical fact! It is saying that we are not living up to our stated ideals. This is true, and uncontroversial.

I think that "this is un-American" is more an expression of the speaker's own idealized interpretation of American values than a statement of historical fact.
That it was an enslaver who wrote "all men are created equal" doesn't negate the phrase as an ideal that America should live up to.
