When researchers learned that Polyphemus, a male humpback believed to be more than 21 years old, was found dead on Nov. 8, they feared the death may fit a worrying pattern. Polyphemus was the third known humpback whale found dead off the coast of British Columbia in less than two months.

On Wednesday morning, news broke about Shawn Lamb receiving a statutory release after being sentenced in 2013 for killing two First Nations women.

This was a shock to many, but to also the victims’ families who were not made aware of this.
