This is good from Joan Aiken on a danger that every children's writer is likely to encounter.
Most writers - most people - have at some point the idea for a good children's book. And maybe something fetches it out: an unresolved trau- ma from childhood to dispose of, or simply the circumstance of having children and telling them stories which seem worth writing down. In one way or another, this person, owing to some environmental factor, Free Gift writes a good book - maybe two or three. And then, although the for- mative circumstances no longer exist, he or she is too caught up in the business to quit. Financial pressure, pressure of success, pressure of habit- it's easy to succumb. I can think of several people who wrote one or two good children's books; and then their interests developed elsewhere in a natural progression and they stopped. I can think of several more who wrote one or two good children's books; and should have stopped there, but didn't. And I need hardly say, since my previous remarks will have made this opinion clear - but I will say it again because I feel so strongly about it: Writing anything for children unless one has a strong, genuine impulse not only to write but to write that one, particular thing - writing anything without such an impulse is every bit as wicked as selling plastic machine-gun toys, or candies containing addictive drugs, or watered- down penicillin.
