It's pretty obvious that a lot of US mainstream media either doesn't recognise authoritarianism or doesn't want to call it out. Either way, it's an excellent way to destroy trust in your institution.

I couldn't do what I do w/out the generosity of scientists, many of whom have taken calls while on vacation, while ill, or while dealing with personal tragedies. They communicate complex ideas, oftentimes in a second language. They have made me laugh, cry, and buckle beneath the wonder of it all. 🧪
Scientists do not get paid for getting quoted in the newspaper about science.

People know this, right?

Last year I was quoted in about 30 media articles, and I received a grand total of $0 for this.

We do it because it’s important, not because we get paid.

We spoke with @johngreensbluesky.bsky.social on @bipisci.bsky.social for our episode "Preventable," and it's a conversation I won't soon forget. Equal parts empathetic and informative, and clearly lays out the injustice currently baked into our global health system. Horrifically relevant.
What a pub day for Everything Is Tuberculosis. Thanks to everyone who showed up in NYC to welcome this little book into the world. I just really hope you like the book. Thanks for reading it!

I have two friends, neither of whom are politics reporters but who both work in “the media,” who both told me yesterday that they aren’t even allowed to write or post about Trump with work accounts because describing anything he’s doing objectively would appear “anti-Trump.”
The NYT, WaPo, LAT, CNN, etc etc have shifted to the right. Fox & the Post et al have always been hard right. Twitter & Meta are controlled by right wingers. On a daily basis, millions of Americans - probably the majority - see nothing but sanitized, accomodationist, right wing coverage of Trump.

Measles is one of the most contagious diseases we know of. It is also preventable. But as vaccine hesitancy rises, more outbreaks are likely to follow. We're joined by @adamratnermd.bsky.social to discuss the lessons measles can teach us about public health. bit.ly/41B0p0u

As @johngreensbluesky.bsky.social says in this week's episode of @bipisci.bsky.social, "Tuberculosis is the exemplary disease of injustice"
"We won’t even know about the new deaths, because all the data collection was supported by U.S.A.I.D." It will be years before we understand the size of this crisis--and we may only understand it when highly resistant forms of TB come home to roost in rich countries.
Critical reporting from Stephanie Nolen on what the interruption of TB funding actually means for those living with the disease--and those caring for them.

We've got a great episode out this week. @adamratnermd.bsky.social and @johngreensbluesky.bsky.social provide great insights into why our healthcare systems continue to allow people to die of preventable - and curable - illnesses.
Honored to be on this podcast with Adam Ratner, whose brilliant book about measles is--like Everything Is Tuberculosis--disappointingly timely.
Two preventable diseases, one viral, one bacterial, are resurging. The anti-vax movement fuels measles outbreaks in the U.S., and author John Green writes about the biggest infectious killer globally: tuberculosis. buff.ly/aE3d0Gp
