I recently joined Google's Open Source Office to help champion OSS growth both internally and externally! I'm thrilled to be back in the open-source ecosystem supporting teams across Google and open-source communities across the globe.
Want to unlock the real potential of #GenAI? It starts with well-built data fundamentals. 💡

My @allthingsopen.bsky.social keynote shows how you can combine AI tools like #GeminiCLI & OSS data tools like #Iceberg to build those fundamentals.

Good morning #AllThingsOpen! Be sure to check out my keynote in about an hour to learn more about how you can use AI to build better data fundamentals!
Less than 1 week until @allthingsopen.bsky.social kicks off! My buddy Lamar and I can't wait to see everyone in Raleigh. Be sure to check out my Monday morning keynote so we can address the elephant in the room to kickoff #AllThingsOpen

Explaining the Bible to the literal Pope is a level of ignorance and ego that I fear humanity may never be able to exceed
really enjoying all the people trying to explain the bible to the pope today

Good morning #CommunityOverCode 2025! If you're here in Minneapolis for ASF's Community over Code 2025, I would love to say hi and get to know the community even better! You can probably find me in any of the data talks. If not, DM me! Let's grab your beverage of choice and chat 😀

There are a lot of technologies that succeed because they map our way of thinking to existing paradigms! For example: Your turn signal clicks because it used to use a relay that made that noise. We no longer use manual relays, but the noise remains!
It just realized that YouTube was probably named YouTube because we used to call televisions the tube (e.g., "go turn on the tube") and because you can make a YouTube "channel" all about you - so it's the you tube - yeah, that just occurred to me.

The United States is THE ONLY COUNTRY ON EARTH that cannot prevent school shootings. It's obviously not just mental health
Speaker Mike Johnson on the Minnesota shooting: "At the end of the day the problem is not guns. Ok, Jen Psaki? The problem is the human heart. It's mental health."

One night, I was getting my 4YO ready for bed and I said "I love you" to him and he goes "yeah" as nonchalantly as anyone has ever said anything

Kids know how to humble you faster than anyone
Didn’t think I’d have much besides T swiz to talk about in my own therapy today but then when I took W to daycare he just walked right in and didn’t even look back at me

Age verification? I used to collect call my parents to pick me up from middle school and say "pleasepickmeupweredone" when they asked for my name
Age verification? I regularly say “videotape” (verb) and “answering machine” to young people confusing & bewildering them

this is a great one ⤵️

I definitely read the Census for fun
We’re not saying we read the census for fun.
But we’re also not not saying that.

As a lifelong Pirates fan, nothing about this surprises me.
even lowly Pittsburgh Pirates - acquired principally by Bob Nutting 18 years ago for 300M & now valued at 1.3B - 8.5% annual return for doormat franchise operating on shoestring budget & profiting from luxury tax from bigger spenders. Nutting is top 10 in personal wealth among 10 MLB owners

This might be the most developer-friendly launch I've seen in.... well I don't know, but a long time. This is awesome!
This is truly a proud moment for me. For the past few months we've pushed non-stop to build Gemini CLI.

It's been a journey, and I couldn't be happier to finally share it with all of you. Free and open source!

Check it out: github.com/google-gemin...

If I ever build a BI tool, the UI will have a button for pie charts. But instead of creating a visualization, it'll just show them this and a LONG text explanation of why they shouldn't use pie charts

As a Pittsburgher, I pride myself on being something of an expert on bridge obsessions. So I can safely say @anthropic.com's Golden Gate Claude was the absolute pinnacle of humanity's technological advances, and it will only be downhill from there.

Good morning #PyConUS, it's a great day for lightning talks! I'd love to talk about open data and learn how you're using Python to analyze your data. Come find me and say hi to the sea otters!

It's #PyConUS25 time!! If you're here in Pittsburgh, come find me to say hi. I'll be the guy in the awesome jacket carrying a bag of salty sea otters.

Who is coming to Pittsburgh for #PyCon this weekend?! I'm looking forward to seeing everyone and showing off my hometown! And, if you like salty sea otters, you'll definitely wanna find me and say hi. You'll be able to find me easily, I'll be the guy in the great jacket!

I wanted to make a joke here, but this is actually a GREAT way to vibe code. Start with documentation, then include that context in your prompt to generate code. Polish and publish!
Fun fact, for most things I've built, I *started* with the documentation. It's often the first thing I do before writing actual code. Then I go back and polish things before I publish.
Documentation is the UI for many technical products. You can build, build, build, but if your docs are an afterthought, people won’t see the features clearly. It’s also helpful for AI to pick up in explanations.
