It's Top Ten Roundup time for Boring Books for Bedtime. There were some changes this year, more history and politics and fewer of the cozy reads that dominated 2024. Some perennial faves and a REALLY surprising number one. Here's to more in 2026!

I feel seen, attacked, and comforted all at once!
Darlings, I say this with all the love in the world—but that new bullet journal you’re about to buy that you know is never going to get used/will just get put into the journal graveyard, isn’t going to fix you. ❤️

Here in Weird Week, I woke up at 9:30 and my first thought was to think what a horrible lazy person I am. And then I remembered I went to bed at 2:30 and 7 hours of sleep is…reasonable? Perhaps my New Year’s Resolution shall be trying to make every thought about myself not start with an insult.

If a postmark doesn't reflect when a parcel was handed-off to the USPS, then it's meaningless. Which is, of course, the point, to make it impossible to validate things like mail-in-voting.

Artists! The US Copyright Office has changed the rules, starting in Feb. we can register up to 20 published 2D works of art in a single application, making it way more affordable!
Important as registration is needed to fight theft in court or the CCB.

Ooooh, I just found homemade soup buried in the freezer! I guess Airport Lounge Week won't be all cheese and stale cookies, after all. It's a post-Christmas miracle.

will also add - yes, this is my personal crusade - that turning podcasts into videos implicitly asks women to once again make more effort than men, as the bar for "camera-ready" for one gender is obviously higher than for the other

I call this Airport Week, because they are the same liminal space where time has no meaning.

Patreon peeps, on this Christmas Eve, please enjoy this month's exclusive—a new reading from "The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus," by L. Frank Baum. It's a charming ode to the magical power of kindness, compassion and generosity, and I hope you love it.

My goal for 2025 was to read 24 new books, which is a modest goal but a big jump from the miserable total I had in 2024, when I just could not get my head around new content.

Final tally this year? 36! I'm so pleased with that.

(PS I don't count all the reading I do for the podcast.)

It's no secret I'm a Great British Bake Off fan (I had a podcast about it, after all). I enjoyed this article from Ruby Tandoh, who I'm happy to see seems to have come to peace with the show and her appearance on it a bit.

Inside the World of “The Great British Bake Off”
The show captures disastrous custard-making, quintessentially British faux-modesty, and the blistering hubris of bakers—including me.

I decided to do a make-your-own onigiri bar for our Christmas party. I just got back from Japan where I ate onigiri for the first time and immediately purchased molds from Daiso. Could be fun, could be a disaster, and there's always Fallback Pizza, I guess!

I keep wanting to say something, and I keep not knowing what to say.

The trans community does not harm cis people by existing. They are just trying to live their lives, same as anyone else. That life doesn't look exactly like mine; my life doesn't match anyone else's. That's okay.

I so love the fact that there's a group called Friends of Friendless Churches in the UK that picks old, abandoned churches (and by old, I mean centuries old) and fixes them up. It's just the sweetest thing to me. Bless their hearts, in the good way.

How beautiful!
My latest aerial embroidery - thawing snow/ice over blue and teal waters 💙 it came out somewhat abstract I think? Or at least more so than my more usual aerials :) I'm hoping for some snow this winter!! This landscape will be available after the new years (to avoid the backlogged post) #art
