So today's Substack about the impact of tariffs concluded:

"in many ways the level of the tariffs is less important than the huge uncertainty Trump’s policies have created. And that uncertainty hasn’t abated at all."

In my latest, acclaimed scholar Abbas Amanat asks the big question re what Israel wants. It's hard to imagine any scenario where Iran emerges as a country "subordinated" to Israeli and U.S. interests. So, instead, Amanat fears that Israel wants another Libya in the Middle East.

Honestly, I know of no such blatant case of political imprisonment & infringement of political speech in the USA in modern times. Maybe there are going back decades, but this was deeply shameful, from the moment masked men unjustly kidnapped her, stuffed her into a van, & locked her up.
Finally. My fellow Fulbright Scholar Rumeysa Ozturk has been freed.

My country jailed her for over a month as—let’s be perfectly frank—a political prisoner. Why? Because she wrote a mild oped that criticised Israel in her student newspaper.

I've thought of her every day.

The slope isn't slippery; the frog isn't gradually getting boiled. Within its first hundred days the Trump administration has openly asserted the right/ power to seize and imprison anyone— including political dissidents, including citizens— and deprive them of any legal recourse at all.

So - I've actually led Ebola outbreak response at USAID.

This is bunk from Elon. They have laid off most of the experts, they're bankrupting most of the partner orgs, have withdrawn from WHO, and muzzled CDC.

What's left is a fig-leaf effort to cover their asses politically.
Elon Musk: "We will make mistakes. We won't be perfect ... so for example, with USAID, one of the things we accidentally canceled very briefly was ebola prevention."

Should be familiar to Erdogan-watchers: assume Trump is actually going to do all the crazy stuff he repeatedly insists he's going to do, assume he's not going to do all the reasonable stuff reasonable people insist he's going to do.
what was my secret to knowing the tariffs are probably gonna happen? Well I just assume that when the president says something they mean it! apparently a substantial chunk of the nation elite aren’t able to do this!
