1. @alisongopnik.bsky.social, Cosma Shalizi, James Evans and myself have a new piece in Science on "AI" Large Models, pushing back against much of the collective wisdom about what they can and can't do. Official below, unpaywalled at henryfarrell.net/large-ai-mod... . So why this now?
Large AI models are cultural and social technologies
Implications draw on the history of transformative information systems from the past

I've written a free and accessible guide to Cephalopod Sentience with Alex Schnell, Piero Amodio and Peter Morse, stunningly illustrated by Roksolana Tkach. Please download and share! It's worth it for the illustrations alone! 🐙 thebrooksinstitute.org/sites/defaul...

Great discussion here. I expect the data will lag, likely by months.
Ok this is making the rounds and tbc the scale of what is happening to the federal workforce and with impoundment is unprecedented - but I think we need to be really careful about assuming this is going to all hit at once in March or that we know the size of the impact 1/
It seems almost unavoidable at this point that we are headed for a deep, deep recession. Just based on 200K+ federal firings & pullback of contracts, the March employment report (to be released April 4) seems certain to show bigger job losses than any month ever outside of a few in 2008-9 and 2020.

Ooof. Called out.
In many ways, Bluesky’s core audience of early adopter geriatric Millennials — very Online information junkies who are suspicious of big tech, crypto, and AI — is almost anti-positioned to understand the kind of appeals that will hit for Zoomer swing voters.

One of the most fantastic discussions on the importance of ontologies and taxonomies, this time in the context of quantum theory:

These two papers, taken together, really cause a rethinking of behavioral economies.

Rather than having anomalous risk preferences; it looks like people have complexity aversion to "hard" decisions, especially on valuation, which drives behavioral anomalies. Herbert Simon ftw.

RIP Marshall Brain. NC shines less brightly for your loss.

In memoriam, I offer this fantastic, prescient story about how AI can shape our future:
