Alice Wong was one of the most effective people challenging the Whiteness of disability communities and its many flaws, but who believed fiercely in us as a community, in disabled people as oracles.

Alice brought so much to so many of us, it’s hard to measure the kind of gratitude I have for that.

Canada treating MAID like a pressure release valve will never not horrify me. The cold cruelties of a system that exists to repeatedly communicate the message to disabled people that they are disposable, and more efficient at dispensing death than it is at care.
A quadriplegic man named Normand Meunier died via MAiD (Medical Assistance in Dying) after being neglected for 4 days in ER. He was denied a specialized mattress, wasn’t turned & ended up with terrible bed sores.

His partner says she was threatened with removal from the ER for advocating for him 🧵

"“Brilliant people have to be in those positions,” Trump said.

He cited efforts by the FAA to hire individuals with disabilities, including Dwarfism, missing limbs and intellectual disabilities."
Very disturbing anti-disability rhetoric here, where Trump blames the recent American Airlines crash on DEI efforts, specifically hiring disabled folks, into the FAA. thehill.com/homenews/adm...

For those with memory loss, I see you this #Thanksgiving; the anxiety you have going into tomorrow. Will you: remember faces/names, struggle to reminisce with family while pretending to know the stories, be so overwhelmed you need to leave? It’s ok to feel this anxiety. 💜 #epilepsy #memoryloss

What really gets my goat about this accurate observation is that physicians are often so quick to psychiatrize disabled people as hysterical or paranoid--but apparently cannot comprehend the lasting psychological effects of being told your doctor thinks euthanasia is an option you should consider
MAiD in Canada - prior to 2020 when we opened track two for non terminal illnesses - it was against the law/physician code of conduct to proactively bring it up.

It’s allowed now. The patient doesn’t have to initiate the discussion. When a doctor suggests you consider death? It has lasting effects.
Here's the thing. YOU should be the person who enquires. It should never be offered as an option.

Even the vet for my cat knows to operate this way.

My colleague and I wrote about how harmful Danielle Smith’s new anti-trans policies would be for ALL youth. Don’t think this is only an attack on trans youth—it makes all children more vulnerable.
Danielle Smith’s new policies make all Albertan youth unsafe
The harms posed to trans youth are more than enough reason to abandon three proposed Alberta bills. However, trans youth are not the only victims of these reckless policies.

Having epilepsy and finding out just how little doctors know about any of it has been such a trip.

You’ve got ghosts in your brain. Do some anticonvulsants about it.

Ive been thinking about how lighting is not all that frequently included in discussions of accessibility--one of my biggest triggers are light and patterns--as someone with epilepsy and migraines, and grocery stores and so many public spaces are so badly lit they leave me a triggered mess.
