A character’s backstory is only as important as the choices it informs. Everything else is window dressing. There’s nothing wrong with window dressing, but too much can just start to look like clutter. Whenever including backstory, always ask what purpose it serves and what would happen if removed.

My first ever attempt at an original novel.
My first ever NaNoWriMo.

From 5:45am - 07:55am every morning for 30 Days ☺️

70621 words.

I’m incredibly proud of the story so far.

Would I do anything different?
Well… I’m nowhere near finished, so maybe I’d have chosen a shorter book to be my first 🤣

The number one advice any & every writing professional can & will give you is this:

DO NOT BE AFRAID TO SUCK.

You have spent years reading books, watching movies & TV, developing taste to know good from bad. NO ONE GETS TO READ YOUR WRITING UNTIL YOU LET THEM. Trust your taste & write fearlessly.

Screenwriters, I’ve been wondering…

Does anyone still start their scripts with “FADE IN”?

I’ve never used it, and don’t seem to see it much anymore…

The most important thing in writing is to finish. A finished thing can be fixed. A finished thing can be published. A finished thing can be made into a movie.

An unfinished thing is just a dream. And dreams fade if you don't hold on tight enough.

So finish the thing.
