As we write, DOGE is reportedly inside the gates of the IMLS (Institute for Museum and Library Services), where Keith Sonderling, Deputy Secretary of Labor and “somehow now Acting Director” of IMLS is dismantling the agency that helps libraries be libraries. /1

The Democratic Party’s problems are not about being moderate or left. That’s a consultant and pundit red herring

The problems are in party organization, the culture of “it’s their turn” nominations, candidate recruitment, gerontocracy, inability to shape media topics, and coming off hella lame

“Trust librarians. They’re the best resource to know — they’ve been trained for this. Do not leave such an important subject to politicians.”
We Asked, You Answered: Your thoughts on regulating books in public schools
When asked if Connecticut should regulate books in public schools, a majority said that librarians should be trusted with selecting which books are available.

We announced our One Book, One Town titles for this year. The adult selection is my favorite of 2024. Please check out Beautyland by Marie-Helene Bertino. If you are a Gen Xer and grew up in the '90s, this is our book.

Please watch the announcement below.

I have always loved public libraries, but having young children has exponentially increased my gratitude and sense of indebtedness to them. Our local library is such a huge part of our lives. The books, the programming, the very intentionally curated kids’ section. It’s all such a gift.

It is hard to emphasize just how overparked Connecticut is but "Main Street Park" in Old Saybrook does a pretty good job

This one acre park is exactly 50% parking lot, 25% parking adjacent grass and sidewalk and 25% pickleball courts

This park is literally surrounded by on and off street parking

Sadly it will never pass.
A bill to break up UnitedHealth, CVS, Cigna and more has been introduced by a bipartisan group of U.S. senators and representatives.

The legislation would force insurers to sell their pharmacy businesses.

It aims to combat PBMs, pharma middlemen who drive up costs.

Clarendon, a neighborhood in Arlington, Virginia, is a “15-minute neighborhood” — you can walk to whatever you need in 15 minutes or less. Building more such neighborhoods, proponents say, would cut pollution and conserve nature.

But do Americans want them?
Analysis | Why so many Americans prefer sprawl to walkable neighborhoods

In the last few months, I have intentionally reduced my podcast consumption and increased my music consumption, whether in the gym, car or while walking. I can't help but feel like it has improved my health.

In an era when misinformation and authoritarianism threaten to overwhelm us, access to information is our defense. Protecting libraries is an act of community solidarity and a commitment to the democratic ideals that define us as a nation.
Opinion: Defense of local libraries requires public support
We must protect free thought and access to information from the MAGA agenda.

Thank you to The Library Pros for hanging out at the Connecticut Library Association's annual conference and having board members as guests. You can listen to Alice Knapp, and I have a great conversation about leadership, "imposter syndrome," and Husker Du.
