1. Today the NIH director issued a new directive slashing overhead rates to 15%.

I want to provide some context on what that means and why it matters.

I participated in a faculty panel a few weeks ago in which senior (ahem) faculty gave advice on careers in academia by pretending luck had very little to do with our success. One piece of advice riled me up, in which it was argued that a reason for their success was their ability to say no. 1/

Oh my
Musk and Ramaswamy have already identified $516B dollars in government savings — it includes cutting all of Veteran’s Affairs health care, eliminating the NIH, and ending funding for federal prisons. @morningjoe-msnbc.bsky.social

I've decided that when researchers say a treatment is "well tolerated" it actually means "I can tolerate my patients having toxicity" and nothing to do with what the patient thinks. We can only make such a statement if we use patient-reported outcome or experience measures.

UCSF hosted its first food pantry event for postdocs today, where a local food bank gives free food to UCSF employees.

This picture represents about half the line that had formed 10 minutes before the market had opened.

There’s a clip of RFK Jr saying his first week at the NIH he’s going to tell the various institute leads that “we’re going to give drug development and infectious disease a break, a little bit of a break, for 8 years.” I cannot overstate how disastrous this would be.
