How do I even put "my doctoral students could not achieve their full scientific potential because they had to worry ICE would abduct them off the street while getting to lab" into a tenure impact statement?

It's almost a sacred moment in a researcher's career where, for the first time, they hand off presenting their work to their mentees.

Today my students presented our proposed project to study the microbial ecology of False Creek Vancouver, and won a prize at Langara's Applied Research Day. 1/2

As is tradition, submitting a research grant application cannot take place without some website failure right when you have all of your materials ready.

Spam calls are getting more targeted: I just got a call from Alberta and the person knew my name. They wanted to confirm that I had some sort of "block chain" account.

I'm guessing that they're targeting people in my demographic (most likely to own Bitcoin etc ?).

“Every $1,300 New York invested in building bike-lanes in 2015 provided benefits equivalent to 1 additional year of life at full health over the lifetime of all city residents, according to a new economic assessment.”

Bike-lanes are a sound public health investment.

Thankful for vaccines
The HPV vaccine has been recommended in the US since 2006. New study out today shows that cervical cancer deaths in young women in the years that followed have plummeted, decreasing 15% per year from 2013-2015.

Stepping into a new role at my work feels like I'm spinning several times as many plates as usual. For all of the #newPIs or #postdocs out there, I'd love to hear your strategies of keeping things moving (read: not totally dropping the ball). #academicsky #research #science

Most people are infectious with COVID for at least 10 days. 24 hours was never going to cut it. And while the CDC did try to mitigate this by adding that you should mask for a few days after returning, predictably no-one is even doing this.

Fantastic display out at #GranvilleIsland put up by @visionzeroyvr.bsky.social , I saw a lot of pedestrians were on board with the absurdity of needing to be visibly holding a brick to get some drivers to slow down at crosswalks.

It's surprising, but fantastic, to see a mainstream media outlet in 2024 recommending wearing N95 masks, and guiding consumers on where to purchase them.

This is the kind of content we need to normalize the wearing of masks in the long-term!
