Reporting style: confrontation with a smile
Big on BC issues, including healthcare #bcpoli #vanpoli
It's not a daily occurrence, but sometimes reporters have to figure out what to do when someone uses an incorrect word in an interview

Do you correct them? Assume they used a similar-sounding word? Will the viewer/reader/listener know what they meant, rather than what they said?

It's challenging

The hellebores are in full bloom and snowdrops have sprouted in Vancouver and it’s only mid-February

Considering the local mountains have got any snow, all signs point to another ugly summer ahead

We may never know exactly what led to the tragedy in Tumbler Ridge but investigators are trying nonetheless

My latest for @ctvvancouver.bsky.social includes BC’s top Mountie and one of the province’s most prominent child psychiatrists

The way parents have been pushing back on divisive narratives and showing compassion for everyone impacted is a true show of community. It says so much about Tumbler Ridge.

Families are still learning if loved ones are alive or dead after the horror in Tumbler Ridge

And conspiracy theories are already spreading
Some have been taken down but screen grabs are circulating widely

I miss the days when people would wait for (and value) facts

Mounties say one suspect is dead but are now working to determine if a second person was involved

This is such a lovely tribute to an insanely talented woman

And a reminder of another Canadian show that charmed itself beyond our borders
For The Ringer, I wrote about how amazing it was that the brilliant Catherine O'Hara finally became a superstar in her 60s, and how sad it is that she was taken from us just when we had all finally begun to appreciate her:
Catherine O’Hara Could Do Anything
And she pretty much did everything. The only tragedy is that it feels like she was just beginning to get the recognition her decades-long career always deserved.

It’s important to bear witness to what’s happening

I believe that in my bones, even for those of us watching from afar
Federal agents shot and killed a 37-year-old Minneapolis resident on Saturday, the city’s police chief said. The shooting prompted clashes between law enforcement and protesters, as Minnesota officials renewed demands that the Trump administration end its immigration crackdown. trib.al/u8ESi4Q

Yes, BC has formally ended a 3 year pilot project decriminalizing possession of illicit drugs for personal use

But this is largely a messaging/optics matter

Even before decrim, the VPD wasn't enforcing simple possession as they focused on bigger issues 1/4

I genuinely don’t get it

There’s a lot of very legitimate concern about how tech is affecting our lives

But having a video recorder in everyone’s pocket is an astoundingly powerful tool against disinformation

We could be having very different discussions about Minneapolis without that

We could all learn a lot from Finland's approach

It's brilliant that they're just adding AI education to the existing media literacy curriculum

A+ human right here
It’s the “season of love and giving”…but this year, doesn’t it seem more like a “season of fear and taking”? Like many of you, I’ve been saddened by the human impact of draconian government budget cuts and how angry many housed Americans are at unhoused Americans.

There's been a lot of talk about violent repeat offenders and how they have a disproportionate impact on crime, law enforcement resources, and other issues

Hard to parse out what this stat will ultimately mean but seems to be a step in the right direction
