At my blog, I write more about my concerns for aspiring entering grad students in chemistry for Fall 2026. To reiterate - if you don't have a plan for next fall RIGHT NOW, you need to talk to your professors and advisers and develop a plan NOW: chemjobber.blogspot.com/2025/11/towa...

One of my very favorite things about being back in CA is the ability to comfortably eat lunch outside and go on walks for sunshine/fresh air. Everyone's idea of perfect weather is different, but I could never have enjoyed this in Houston outside of like one week a year

Given the many life transitions over the past couple months I've been comfort re-listening to The Adventure Zone Balance for the nth time. Forgot how much I loved everything about The Stolen Century and especially the conservatory ❤️

A fundamental truth of the lab is that instruments can only answer the questions you ask them. A question for myself, however, is why do I keep managing to ask such bad questions 🙃

#chemsky How common is it for people you do not know to try and list you as a reference/referral on an application to your company? Either asking to, or just doing it without asking first? Just happened to me for the first time and it feels... weird

Wish it was reasonable or economical to have an in-home nmr or mass spectrometer. I am normal and can be trusted with a 4T electromagnet

I don't have capital G Gamer skills, but over the last few weeks I've been picking my way through 1000xResist and man what a gorgeous game to experience. Vibes of Evangelion, the surreal poetry of This is How You Lose the Time War, and just as impossible to explain as Disco Elysium. Hekki grace ❤️

total synthesis chemists, definitely hardcore widget-ers

[looks at camera] metholology types? they got some spreadsheet going on

the central divide in science is whether at the end of your phd program you are expected to produce a little widget or a spreadsheet. all empirical disciplines can be classified along the spreadsheet-widget axis.

This is incredibly cool: if you search for a condition that’s affected your family, the site returns stats on how much NIH has done for that disease, *and* a contact form for reaching out to tell your Members of Congress why you want to see them defend NIH.

Pass it on!

#PhDone !!! Very happy to say that (yesterday) I successfully defended my thesis after five years at Rice University working with @pushingarrows.bsky.social to become Dr. Buzsaki! Thank you to everyone who was there, in person, on zoom, or in spirit. ❤️

Share with US students who had their offers of admission withdrawn for PhD programs:

Apply to Canada. Check out Canadian professors, and contact us. Our system works differently here, and we are all still, technically, able to accept students for Fall 2025.

I gotta say, it's quite something to have started my PhD during the height of COVID, and now about to defend during... all of this. Could I maybe live in some non-interesting times, please?

I try to mitigate my hoarding tendencies but I suspect this picture won't be far off for me 😅
In grad school, I saved any reaction product that wasn’t what I wanted, but wasn’t complete decomposition either. You know, just in case. This was the result of clearing out those vials post-defense. #chemsky

Also schedule in maintenance for your instruments, or they will schedule it for you! At the worst possible time, naturally!
hug your instruments, speak softly to them, tell them you believe in them and that they should not break and ruin your day/week/month/life
