I think a lot of social networks have hurt folks to the point where they carry a ton of highly toxic priors with them across the internet, leading to a ton of kind of crappy downstream effects.

I think a lot of people would be a ton happier if they were more willing to say, “I have absolutely no idea, but I’d be willing to learn more.”

Likely many.
I'm wondering what percentage of the people (even those who really want to crush their enemies) are just reacting to never *actually* having good moderation. I mean, the best we had on twitter was 1) sharable blocklists, 2) some help from twitter employees to suspend accounts. that's garbage.

This is true and good.
I love watching people figure out the most difficult problems in social networking don't have technical solutions :)))

Young social networks are like those old Windows life sims where you watch the little dots run around and form little coalition's and play together and have fun and devour their enemies in bouts of carnal ecstasy.

I’m entirely convinced that people should see their Internet clout as a constant source of shame and regret, and if they did, peace would reign.

The platonic, unreachable ideal for all social networks is for no one, ever to believe that one day, with enough effort, they could be the coolest person in the room.

There is a very predictable plot arc to social networks.

1. First day of Summer Camp
2. Sophomore year of High School
3. That one time you went to LA.
4. Slightly boring but otherwise satisfying second job.
5. Grinding death march.
6. Fallout New Vegas

We should just abstract the word “tweet” like we do words like Google or YoYo or Healthcare.
April 28, 2023 at 5:46 PM
Perhaps the toxic, parasocial heckscape was in us all along.

The vibes on What’s Hot have…soured a bit. Less first day of Summer Camp and more second quarter of Sophomore Year.
April 28, 2023 at 4:35 AM
I think we might be doing the thing again, which would be a shame.

I don’t know when I became a Silicon Valley insider. This is sort of unsettling. Can I go back?

Arguments about what to call the word-thoughts posted here is the path to the dark side. We should just agree to rotate.

It’s always a race to make this the case.
Tale as old as time
True as it can be
Barely making friends
Then somebody bends
Makes Big Account invitees
