If I had to speculate, I’d guess the increase in the number of queer characters, paired with the increased rate of their removal this year, reflects early capitulation to anti-LGBTQ political interests by media companies.

It’s equal parts validating and disappointing to see GLAAD’s data align so closely with our own study’s. We hope our data can provide a comparison between how this trend functions for queer inclusion vs average. These numbers on their own are upsetting. In context, even more so. #SaveQueerStories
"Over 84 million American adults say they’re more likely to watch a TV show if it features at least one LGBTQ+ character,” Townsend said. "… This audience has continued to tune in year after year.”
Nearly Half of All LGBTQ+ Characters Will Disappear From TV Next Season, GLAAD Study Finds
The 2024-25 TV season recorded 489 queer characters across broadcast, cable and screenings, but cancellations and plot find a deep decline to come

It seems that queer characters are vanishing in groups. Shows with prominent representation often have more than one queer character (some shows, like Our Flag and Heartstopper, have 4 or more). When an inclusive show is canceled, we lose a LOT of representation at once. #SaveQueerStories

GLAAD’s latest Where We Are on TV report shows a 4% rise in LGBTQ+ characters this year, but 41% won’t return in 2026, signaling major losses in queer representation.

Way back in the pause before this announcement, I said that if Doctor Who and Heartstopper (two cultural juggernauts) were to be canceled, it would be a very grim sign of things to come.

Both of these shows have now been reshuffled and defunded. This is de facto censorship. #SaveQueerStories

Thank you @bjcolangelo.bsky.social for this article! Queer-inclusive shows like Dead End were already struggling for support, lacking promotion and getting canceled early and more often. We need these narratives and should be supporting them now!

If Netflix capitulates to their demands, an already strained market for LGBTQ+ animators might become even more dire.

The grim aspect of this retroactive outrage is that the fascists already won on this front. These people are getting mad about shows from the '10s and early '20s because there's vanishingly few now. They've already been purged. But fascism can never "win", it always looks backward for more enemies.
This is proof that conservative parents don't spend actual time with their kids (well, we know Graham doesn't). If they did, they'd know that there have been queer characters on Netflix (and Disney, Nickelodeon etc.) for decades. Like, they're only just discovering Dead End Paranormal Park.

Power speaks about media representation the same way it speaks about education, and that's because both have a similar capability of making a more connected, informed, diverse, and empathetic citizenry.

All progress is decried as going too far + being too much, even though it never goes far enough.
