Sarah Farms! Incubator is sprouting a few more seeds. We've planted two bottle gourd seeds, one decorative gourd, and one sprouted apple seed I found in an apple last night! 🤭 Big bowl has mint. Cans are from recycle bin with tops cut off and holes drilled in bottom for drainage.

Telescope update: designed a shim to mount a 6mm lens in the little Raspberry Pi camera; can now focus on things far away. Factory lens mount was too short. Sensor size is weird; couldn’t just swap it.

Also designed a mounting bracket but it will need a couple more iterations.

I think we had a couch with that same fabric in the 70’s.

Italian voice actor Carlo Bononi was the voice of all of the characters on Pingu. A trained clown by trade, he used a theater technique called grammelot, which consists of "speaking" in a mix of babbled gibberish noises. He improvised all the voices live and unscripted.

First picture from the telescope! 🥳

Uh, work in progress, obviously. 🙃

Brunch!

Ok but if we’re ending the war on protein (🤷‍♀️) then for an adult, this needs to be three meals, not six. “A piece” of chicken isn’t really very precise. Thighs are cheap, but not very big.

Hopefully “one other thing” is pizza. 🍕

But probably a can of plain kidney beans instead. 🫘😐

Ok, the balcony cleaning project is about as good as we can get it. Four days work. 😮‍💨 Some stuff needs to go to the dumpster, but getting stuff to the dumpster is a whole other issue.

Still need finishing touches on the telescope!

Astronomy!

Putty knife duct taped to a broom handle, shown on my gradually tidier balcony. Using in combination with water and a 30ft hand sprayer to remove old mud dauber wasp nests above my balcony.

Part of my telescope project… somehow?!?! 🤷‍♀️

In addition to the mint, I’m also going to try growing bottle gourds in the other pot on the balcony. Worst case: it doesn’t work. Meh. No biggie.

Telescope now has a Raspberry Pi on it.

We need to resolve some power issues though. Current plan: A/C power brick and extension cord.

Also need to work on the hypothetical viewfinder camera; blue masking tape isn’t really a long term mounting solution.

Designed a bracket to mount the Raspberry Pi to the telescope. Printing a test copy now. Assuming it fits I’ll need to print two “good ones”. One more problem solved? 🤞

Is there some bizarre interpretation of the phrase “chocolate croissant” that I’m unaware of that somehow includes Pocky?

This is an outrage.

Astronomy Cat 😽 woke me up at 4am despite the telescope not being quite ready yet. I went out on the balcony for a quick test. I think we might be able to get some pictures of Jupiter this weekend, hardware, software, weather, and health permitting. 🥳

Minor telescope improvement I hope: the thumbscrews on the secondary mirror assembly were digging into the top of the secondary holder, causing it to rotate and making it difficult to collimate the mirrors. Hopefully these little end caps will help.

Hello 👋 I am an independent bookstore who wants to help you find good sci-fi/fantasy books. I’m also overfolio with dad jokes.

BUT the algo has bibliophiled me away—condemned to be seen by no one.

Please, help me appendices the day and find new people to delight and dismay.

The potting mix for the telescope project is here.

… I’m pretty sure this makes sense… somehow?

Oh, right, I’m going to try planting mint to discourage wasps. I believe the scientific evidence for this approach is weak. But it’s not expensive to try and there are already big empty pots out there.

Added some springs between the telescope and the mount so it will do a better job of holding its position when the balance isn’t quite perfect.

The cat still hasn’t been in the bucket. Maybe it’s haunted?
