Thanks for the reminder @janemunday.bsky.social. Every summer, I repost this article DROWNING DOES NOT LOOK LIKE DROWNING. To date, I know of FOUR kids who were saved after someone who'd clicked on the link learnt how to spot actual drowning. Take time to read and pass on.

Excited to be giving the keynote address for this on Thursday afternoon, entitled 'Making and Unmaking the World of the Early English East India Company'. The talk involves a lot of drinking, multilingual cursing, and things going up in flames. And that's if it goes well!

There's no doubt that editors for academic publishing need more help and support to keep things going.

But my god, this isn't it.

I've published in a number of OUP outlets. This would force me to reconsider. I suspect other #SkyStorians will, too.

Wrath keeps overtaking me everytime I think about RFK. Why? I'm a type 1 diabetic. I got it when I was 14. Guess what you need if you're a type 1 diabetic? Insulin. Or you die. But my family believed that it could be cured with herbs & faith healing. I had a near death experience when I was 14. 🧵

A very succinct summation of why AI isn't going to be the thing they say it is. There's no road to there from where we are.
In other words, when you ask for example “do vaccines cause autism?” you are looking for information about whether a thing in the world (a vaccination) produces an outcome (autism). But the LLM can only answer “what words could sound right after this?”

Icebergs? The size of a city? 90 miles from the UK? Must be a joke, right?

No! Our new paper in @natcomms.nature.com shows massive tabular icebergs broke off the UK in the last ice age before the UK’s ice shelves disintegrated from climate warming.
