Will TikTok go dark again in the U.S.? Or will it find a buyer before the April 5th deadline? Lots of speculation right now, but few concrete details. www.bbc.com/news/article...
Buyers circle and rumours swirl as TikTok sale deadline looms
Despite the increasing number of potential buyers, neither the app nor its Chinese owner have confirmed they will do a deal.

Thank you Meta for finally addressing my biggest problem with your apps (they protect my privacy too much)
A memo at Meta states privacy teams will have less authority to delay products and previous privacy decisions will be reviewed, as some are overly "risk-averse" (Kalley Huang/The Information)

I am happy to say the "Followers only" reply setting is getting implemented. We're also adding a way to set default reply settings

If you want your posts to default to "Followers only," that'll become an option

Is it time to finally leave that social media platform behind?

This is something I'm seeing a lot of people talk about, including SMMs.

If this has been on your mind, today's TSP newsletter talks about how to leave, when to leave, and where to go. thesocialplatypus.substack.com/p/bye-bye-bye

I disagree with this CTV News article that anyone is “anxiously” waiting to see what happens with the tariffs. Canadians are already hitting back hard by opting for Product of Canada purchases. www.ctvnews.ca/politics/art...
Developing: Canada prepared to hit back with retaliatory tariffs should Trump follow through
Canadian officials are anxiously waiting to see if U.S. President Donald Trump follows through on his threat to slap Canada with devastating tariffs today.

The 1st time the Trump administration tried to ban TikTok (in 2020) Oracle & Walmart were in talks to buy the app. Here we are in 2025 & once again there are reports that Oracle (and a group of U.S. investors) are in talks with White House officials over TikTok. @npr.org www.npr.org/2025/01/25/g...
Exclusive: White House in talks to have Oracle and U.S. investors take over TikTok
The aim is to place oversight control in the hands of American software company Oracle and other investors. Under federal law, TikTok must split apart from China, or face a nationwide ban.

This is shocking.
The NFL ordering a team to shut down their @bsky.app is a stark reminder of just how curated our feeds are on traditional social media platforms. It’s not just that algorithms dictate what we see—those algorithms are shaped by business interests and partnerships behind the scenes. #Decentralization

I really long for the days when my biggest social media stress was trying to fit a handle, hashtag and link into 140 characters.

TikTok could be banned. Soon. OR it might not get banned. Soon or ever. I hope this has been helpful

Meta's removal of third-party fact checking and updates to its Hateful Conduct that remove restrictions on topics like immigration, gender identity and gender will likely cause an increase in hateful rhetoric. If your company doesn't have a social media comment policy yet, you need one now.

The US gov't has really poked a bear over this potential TikTok ban. I've seen lots of anti-Meta videos, and lots of TikTokers talking about moving over to the Chinese-based app, Red Note. The app has become so popular that even in Canada (where I am), it's currently ranked 4th in the App Store.

I hit pause on my newsletter last year amid some health issues and life events. But I'm excited to say that I'm back! The first issue went out this morning.

Inside the issue: A long-video trend, Meta's "free speech" updates, and a new Gen Z obsession. thesocialplatypus.substack.com/p/its-a-long...
It's a long story.

What a year! Bluesky opened its doors just last February. Since then, we opened federation, launched video, rolled out trending topics, and a whole lot more.

Great research on what Gen Z got for xmas (the number one gift was a bit surprising): www.tiktok.com/@caseymorrow...

FYI: I noticed a lot of Gen Alpha kids unwrapping food items like Ranch dressing and cans of beans. 🫘

Is anyone else surprised that it's officially 2025 and no one has created a movie yet featuring a social media manager dealing with a major PR/or other type of crisis? I feel like so many of us have a story to tell.

Went to the Santa Claus parade in Harrow, Ontario last night. Great parade, but the best part may have been watching these riders take their horses through the Tims drive thru afterwards. 🐴

The polarizing nature of social media platforms seems to be getting more severe. Someone I know in the post-secondary space recently told me that leadership doesn’t want them to leave Twitter completely and move to Bluesky because they might appear too left leaning. Anyone else experienced this?
