On 1 May 2025, our ERC Synergy-sponsored project, The Hidden Weapon: Blockade in the Era of the Two World Wars, or BLOCKADE for short, will begin. BLOCKADE is a collaborative initiative aimed at uncovering the most globally consequential blockades in history, those of the World Wars.

Bij waarschuwingen voor een hybride oorlog met Rusland gaat het soms over een ‘vijfde colonne’. De uitdrukking stamt uit de Spaanse Burgeroorlog en is de afgelopen eeuw vooral gebruikt om vergaande maatregelen te nemen tegen minderheden, zegt @samuelkruizinga.bsky.social

Hosted by the University of Cyprus Library, the event featured nearly 100 presentations across 23 panels, alongside two roundtables and a keynote by the incomparable Martin Thomas.

Reposting this by the brilliant Frédéric Mégret from the other website. As a historian working on colonial warfare and mass violence, I have always had a rather cynical view of the legal framing of war and 'war crimes' etc. and it is tragic to see legal scholars begin the question this as well...
