I deleted my previous post about the US National Archives. Turns out it was a change in parking policy only.
I heard from someone who works there that management needs better messaging skills - I mean, that:

the research rooms are still open to researchers, no change in that policy

buses and cars will no longer be able to drive up right to the building, that is the change in policy

Trying to help spread the word about NARA. It isn't as bad as we thought, but bad news spreads quickly and is hard to rebut. 🗃️
False panic here. I could just delete this 🧵, but instead will explain what I learned after speaking with a colleague who works there.
This was a messaging error.
The only policy change was no longer allowing buses and cars to drive up to the building.
There is no change to research access.
This is a huge restriction on access to federal records.
First he fires the archivist.
Then most of the senior employees.
Now few will be able to read federal records that used to be public.
This impacts historians, politicians, journalists, genealogists, …
Closing access to knowledge & evidence

To be in public office right now is to constantly ask yourself: How do I make sure I'm standing on the right side of history?

There's a simple answer.

The wrong side of history will always tell you to be afraid - the right side of history will always expect you to be brave.

Also if you really really want to dive down the rabbit hole of Roman Catholic clerical dress: why, when, what the materials are & the significance of each garment and the ceremonial life of the Church, pick up a copy of James Charles Noonan’s The Church Visible:

I know everyone is talking about “Conclave” & don’t mistake me-I love Fiennes Tucci Lithgow & La Rossellini but please watch “The Shoes of the Fisherman” from the late Cold War 60s when a Ukrainian bishop & political prisoner in Siberia is elected pope. Filmed on location in Rome & St John Lateran.

How do we hold our government accountable?

In part, government records.

The kind that Signal-gate made impossible.

It's not just incompetence.
It's not only national security.
It was an attack on democracy as well.

On this episode of "History Matters" -- link below.
This week’s History Matters (...and so does Coffee!) is a special pre-recorded edition! Joanne Freeman beams in to reflect on the implications of “Signalgate,” highlighting the critical importance of transparency, paper trails, and historical accountability in a democracy.

Be aware that government records belong to the government—& the American people.

And that those records can hold people w/political power ACCOUNTABLE for what they do.

The accountability of politicians to the people who gave them power is the ESSENCE of democracy.

Signal prevents accountability.
