Trump: It looks like it’s about $3.1 billion

Powell: I’m not aware of that.

Trump: It just came out

Powell: You just added in a third building

Trump: It’s a building that’s being built

Powell: It was built five years ago.

Gift link to a chilling report from Haaretz that everyone should read. Even if only a fraction of this (and some of the paper’s previous detailed reporting on possible war crimes) is true, we should all be deeply saddened and sickened, as I am right now.

We'll see how this particular story unfolds, but this is precisely the kind of cheating I expect to see more frequently under Trump. And it's the kind of cheating I expect will undermine investor confidence in US stocks and the US economy. US exceptionalism is dying.

Always remember--this is not a case of Trump appeasing Putin--its actually him joining Putin. Its not Munich 1938, its the Nazi-Soviet Pact of 1939.

The financial press was giddy when Trump won - endlessly talking about "American Exceptionalism" and "unleashed animal spirits." It is finally beginning to dawn on them that Trump is actually a disaster for the economy.

This was the end goal of crypto aligning behind Trump - the crypto economy has very few actual dollars in it and relies on finding new people to hold the bag to get their dollars. The US government is the ultimate bag holder and they’re going to use your tax dollars to bail out crypto owners.

The irony (tragedy?) of US foreign aid is that it's actually been pretty stingy, compared to most other developed countries. And now it will practically be non-existent. I see conservatives saying we should use that money at home, but the fact is that any savings will go to the rich, as tax cuts.

Why Musk and Doge won't find much to cut. The US already has a small government. It has more debt than other countries because it does not collect sufficient revenue and it gets ripped off by powerful interests (e.g. health insurance companies).

Using Democracy to Balance the National Debt
Discussions on the national debt (recently revived by the debt ceiling crisis) tend to be relatively superficial in the US.

"The March employment report...seems certain to show bigger job losses than any month ever outside of a few in 2008-9 and 2020.... Add on to that enormous private market uncertainty — how could you hire in these conditions? — and this is going to be very, very bad."

My thoughts on the dangers of wealth inequality. It's not just bad for social health indicators, it's a threat to democracy and thus to freedom and prosperity. We must do more to contain it.

A greater urgency to contain wealth inequality
In recent US elections we were able to see that economic inequality is not just a moral problem that academics focus on because of the negative effects it has on social health.

A thread to help me keep track of the ways Trump's policy making will hurt the economy:
Mass deportations - slow growth, increase inflation.
Tariffs - slow growth, increase inflation, damage relations.
Removing watchdogs (e.g., CFPB, inspectors general) - increases corruption, undermines trust...

Republicans are gonna pack the courts with Aileen Cannon type judges. This will embolden Republican criminals to engage in corruption. They will know they will be protected. I expect corruption and theft on levels this country may have never seen before.
