This is from Kara Walker’s installation “Fortuna and the Immortality Garden (Machine)” at the SF MoMa. There are 4 distinct sections in the exhibit, the first being Fortuna herself, positioned in the back at the very right of the frame — an impossibly tall female figure standing near the base of the stairs, twisting to look at you and dropping little fortunes as you walk by. Mine fell out as half a word, but my friend got “you are not the protagonist.” Prominently pictured is the immortality garden, or the majority of it. A placard close by states that the obsidian in which the figures are situated in was chosen for its cleansing quality, and the six (6!) unique figures are themselves programmed with unique motions. The hand to the right is part of a larger robed figure who, as he raises his arms, also lifts the child animatronic placed in the center. Her feet kick on occasion, but most of the time it seemed as though she was a limp body being thrown in the air. To the left of that scene, from this view, another figure of a woman in a bodice-less dress has bells attached to her arms and, as she moves her arms and torso, the bells jingle. The three non-pictured are a woman, man, and a child — the woman plucks strings from within her stomach, the man holds a bell in his arm, and the child stares forward with a doll in her hand. Also not pictured is the back of the installation, a separate garden where one of the figures bends down to try and pick up the arms that have fallen off of his body. The last section, pictured behind the bell-woman-figure, shows different sculptures that relate stylistically to the gallery — though, to me, I felt like they were the “work in progress” pieces that eventually inspired/led to the final installation. I love Kara Walker. Like a lot. Her work is terrifying and inspiring and hopeful all at the same time, and this felt like the ritual — as if all her pieces were always going to lead to this gallery. Uniquely incredible work. Two young boys sit in front of Amy Shepard’s “Breonna Taylor.” The titular Breonna Taylor stands in a teal dress in front of a beautiful and serene lighter teal background. In the next room over was the official portrait of Michelle Obama, and directly in front of Breonna Taylor was a “wizard of oz”-esque painting of a woman on her bike in front of a sea of sunflowers: the framing of the gallery completely redefined the Breonna Taylor piece for me — we can talk all day about Shepard’s technique and her ability to render texture on fabric and her choice of color, but that would be kind of missing the point, no? The Breonna Taylor piece is both a remembrance and a celebration, an invitation to honor her as she truly is: a sister, a daughter, and a friend. To define her solely by her tragic end is to murder her again. Here, we see a woman, posed and powerful, looking directly at the viewer. Her expression didn’t feel confrontational, nor welcoming necessarily (I read the gaze as frustrated or resolute) but nonetheless it is distinct from the mainstream portrayal.
