And then there’s Samus. You might be thinking that Samus is a poor example of an EXSFC, and you’d be correct, but she’s interesting because of how much her assumed character came from American perceptions and localization issues. For a long time, most people just assumed she was an EXSFC because the small handful of things people knew about her before Other M made her seem like one. Samus was a bounty hunter, a woman of few words with a muscular physique. Almost all of the criteria I mentioned earlier people projected onto Samus, even the ambiguous sexuality stuff. And then it turned out that Samus being a bounty hunter was a cultural misunderstanding. It turned out that she was a much more selfless hero, in a way that feels, relatively speaking, self-sacrificing in a feminine-coded way. And then Other M, the first game to truly elaborate on Samus’s character came out; it stripped Samus of her emotional resilience and loaded her with maternal themes. The game infantilized her during her confrontations with archnemesis Ridley.

This is the big thing that made me lose interest in Nintendo; the decline from Pikmin to Pikmin 3 is stark. First game is pretty open after an interminable 20~ minute tutorial (bad enough for a game meant to be replayed many times). Pikmin 3 gives the player almost no freedom.
